Jin Rayne is having trouble adjusting to the new life he’s supposed to love. Instead of adapting to being the mate of tribe leader Logan Church, Jin can’t get past the fact that his lover was straight before they met. He’s discovered the joy in belonging to Logan but fears his new life could disappear at a moment’s notice, despite Logan’s insistence that they are forever, end of story.
Jin wants to trust Logan, but that desire will be put to the test both by a rival tribe leader and by a startling revelation about Jin’s existence. At stake is Jin’s life and his place in the tribe. If he’s going to survive to see Logan again, he’ll have to release his fear and freely accept the bond, for only then can he truly trust.
I cannot stress this enough – THIS IS NOT A STANDARD FLUFFY ROMANCE – these shifter stories have bite.
I love Jeff Gelder’s narration. That is not to say I don’t miss Sean Crisden’s narration, because I kind of do. I miss Crane’s Muppet voice and Logan’s growly Batman voice. I’m weird, I know. I’m always skeptical and worried when they go with another narrator mid-series. Luckily Jeff Gelder does an awesome job! Considering how many times I’ve listened to this audio book – I cannot express my love enough for it.
I love the werepanther world Calmes has built. In Book two of the series, Jin and Logan are mated, but that doesn’t mean that everything’s calmed down, the opposite is far more true. Their growing pains trying to assimilate to the enormous changes in their lives is fascinating, maddening, and fantastic!
I loved the parts when I got to see some of Logan’s struggle to be the number one in Jin’s life…
“I’m your mate! There is nothing or no one I care about more than you, but first, before anything, I am semel to your reah. Your semel! If you’re hurt, you call me. If you’re sad, you call me. If you need protection or love or… anything––you call me! I am the one you turn to for all things. No one else, only me!”
“We’re different, it’s true, but not enough to matter and never enough to be apart. I don’t need to be everything; I just need to be close to it, because for me…you’re all there is.”
This was a hard story to read in a lot of places. For the majority of the story Jin and Logan are kept apart in ways that are fucking brutal to read/listen to. It’s definitely NOT for the faint of heart. But, in the end we get to see a BAMF! Jin make his way back to Logan’s side, and all becomes right in their world again.
“You have to have me with you. I’m your mate, Logan Church, and I am necessary.”
“More than that,” he groaned deep in the back of his throat, dropping to one knee, unable to take even one more step. “You’re it, you’re all there is.”
Look, I’m not going to lie…Mary Calmes just does it for me. The insta-love, the sarcasm, the humor, the pain in the ass MC…it all works for me. The alpha / dominant who’s also able to let his lover be himself hits all my tingly spots.
Sure, it’s not going to be for everyone but, for me, it was a super enjoyable read and for those who love Calmes’ work, I don’t think they’ll be disappointed with the series.
I LOVE THIS SERIES!
