Please welcome Layla Reyne to the blog today talking about some of her favorites M/M romances.
Have you ever gone out on a limb for a new book or new author? Not your typical genre, not your typical writing style, not an author you’ve read before, but you buy the book because a fellow reader or author recommended it or you read a blog post about the book or author that intrigued you. These are just a few surprising reads that captivated me recently.
Wolfsong by TJ Klune – M/M Paranormal Romance
I read some PNR, though more often in M/F romance. However, Megan Erickson’s steamy and entertaining Daring Fate piqued my interest in M/M shifter romance, and TJ Klune’s Wolfsong reeled me in. Wolfsong is stunning. A coming of age story involving wolf-shifters, magic, and romance, I couldn’t put it down. Ox is so compelling and so real you can’t help but cheer and cry for him, an Alpha-human who isn’t a bully but rather an alpha by sheer force of will, leadership and dedication. And his chemistry with Alpha-wolf Joe is palpable. Add to the compelling story and characters, TJ’s innovative writing and stylistic choices play beautifully into the storytelling and deepen the reader’s connection with Ox. Everything about this book worked for me. Bravo!
The Lawrence Browne Affair by Cat Sebastian – M/M Historical Romance
My favorite book of 2017 so far, and I am not a historical romance reader. Like many readers who shy away from romantic suspense due to the law enforcement alphabet soup, I shy away from historical romance due to the bygone words and details that, in looking up, take me out of the story and romance. Cat, however, does a masterful job of setting the Regency England stage without overdoing the historical details and this story, in particular, feels very modern. Lawrence has what today we’d diagnose as social anxiety disorder, but those words are never used; they didn’t exist in 1816. Neither did the notion of a therapy dog, but that’s clearly what Lawrence’s dog is for him. And Georgie’s acceptance of Lawrence, his recognition of what he needs—small groups of friends, routines, and patience—makes for a beautiful romance and wonderful read.
His Royal Secret/His Royal Favorite by Lilah Pace – M/M Royal Romance
I don’t typically seek out the royal romance trope, but I’d heard good things about this duology, and boy, did it live up to the hype. The chemistry snaps between Ben and James from first meet and both characters are fully fleshed out and likeable, with their own issues and interesting backstories. The intrigue of keeping the relationship secret adds a nice touch of suspense, the secondary characters are A+ and most of all, the royal aspect of the story, while central, wasn’t overdone and didn’t overwhelm the romance. And I absolutely adored the dynamic between the Queen and Ben, how his life and professional experiences made it so he understood her when her own family did not and thereby, became the unifying thread the royal family needed.

But with hack after hack threatening a high-security biocontainment facility, time is running out to thwart a deadly terrorist attack.
