? ? Let’s Do the Time Warp ? ?

the-rocky-horror-picture-show-small Last night I did something I haven’t done in …. 20+ years. I’ll refrain from mentioning the actual number of years. I went to the midnight Halloween showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show.ย  I took my 14 year old daughter and three of her friends and off we went. I wish I had pictures but it was too dark so you’ll have to rely on my descriptive skills.

There were a fair number of Dr. Frank-N-Furters, a couple of Rockys wearing nothing but shiny gold shorts. Mmmm, nice. Although one of them also had no shoes on but was running around wearing nothing but tiny short socks. My daughter’s friend goes “That’s Devon, one of my camp counsellors.” Oh, well, she’s seen a lot more of Devon than she ever has before. There were Riff Raffs and Columbias and Brads and Janets. Also a fair number of princesses, bunnies, and variations on the sexy “whatever” theme. Along with one goth Mom accompanied by Bunnicula, Charlie Chaplain and a pirate. I really hope the red hair dye truly does wash out.MickRock2007-May new

There was a lot of good natured fun as we waited on the sidewalk for about 45 min. to get in. When cars would go by they would honk and everyone would cheer madly. The funniest thing I overheard was a young man dressed up as a woman say quietly to his friend “I’m not sure I should be saying this, but I’m REALLY liking wearing these clothes.” So I’m not sure there is a cross-dresser in the making or he was just really drunk. The fact that everytime a bus stopped he would run up wave at people, scream and proclaim to have “virginized” the bus may lead me to believe the latter.

Once the movie started everyone was very into it, playing along, tossing rice and toast and toilet paper and shouting out lines. I still found rice in my ear this morning. There was dancing, clapping and laughing and an entire theatreFrank 2 on their feet doing the Time Warp is a sight to see. So we had a great night and I’d say next year if you get a chance to go you should, just for the experience at least once.

I tried to include the Time Warp video so you can all practice and be ready for next year but WordPress is giving me fits. So here is the link. I hope everyone who celebrates had a fun Halloween night and that you are enjoying a sugar coma today.

  • My sister talked me into going to the show when I was 16. It as playing at the theater on the UofO campus. I remember thinking “What the heck is with these people in line?”, (I had no clue what the show was about.) What a trip!! Went home, learned the Time Warp, and the next time I was prepared!!! My purse full of rice, toast, squirt gun, lighter……I LOVED it!!! Still do 24 years later!

    • The first time I went I had no idea either, but there weren’t the costumes we saw the other night. No internet back then. My daughter and her friends had searched on-line and knew what to throw when. Kids are smarter these days. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • I’ve never seen TRHPS live. But should – it sounds like a blast! I do remember doing the time warp at the roller rink.

Juliette Gordon Low (who founded the Girl Scouts) went deaf in one ear after a grain of rice thrown at her wedding lodged in it and became infected. Maybe next time you should wear earmuffs…

  • I’m jealous. They closed the midnight showings here where I live :(. But I followed my Halloween tradition, and watched the movie (followed by Practical Magic). It’s still great, even if slightly less fun. But I’m still jealous.

    • I guess you could throw rice and toast around your living room but it doesn’t have quite the same effect. ๐Ÿ™‚ Hope you got up and danced the Time Warp.

    • Mmmm. Gouda. ๐Ÿ™‚ It is cheesy and over the top and completely wacky and lots of fun. LOL Everyone should try it at least once. That’s what everyone always says right? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • I never saw this movie. But I hear about it so often that I probably should see it soon! I also need to see Gone with the Wind, The Godfather, and many other movies that are part of our cultural milieu.

    • Well, I’ve never seen those ones either hon but I can guarantee you’ll have a lot more fun at Rocky Horror. LOL You’d make a great Frank-N-Furter, or Josh. Next year you guys dress up and take pics for me. ๐Ÿ™‚

We used to go to see a showing of Rocky Horror every Friday night on the Danforth and we would take toast and rice to throw at the screen and sing along with the movie.:) It was a lot of fun!

    • It was a lot of fun. I didn’t envy whoever had to clean up the theatre after though. LOL After three shows in a row you could have fed a small Asian country for a week with the rice on the floor. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Sounds very cool. Although I do think it was a bit mean of you to be texting me and bragging about all the half-nekkid twinks in the audience, especially when it was too dark for piccies. ๐Ÿ™

  • Sounds like you had a great time. Iโ€™ve been to a few midnight showings of Rocky Horror. The guys dressed as Dr. Frank-N-Furters almost invariably say they are straight and are doing it for their girlfriends. There is just something about Rocky Horror that makes people feel comfortable with cross-gender role play – itโ€™s magical! ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • I think the ones here were straight too, or else they were faking it really well with those girls they were with. LOL My daughter and her friends were joking they had to find a male friend next year to dress up like Frank-N-Furter. Good luck with that girls. ๐Ÿ™‚ It was fun.
