Gay Book Reviews is excited to welcome K-lee Klein to the blog today, talking about fan-favorite couple Brett and JT from Unbreak My Heart!
Hey, y’all. Thank you for stopping by to help me celebrate the rerelease of Unbreak My Heart from Dreamspinner Press and huge thanks to Gay Book Reviews for letting utilize their space. The official release date is for Unbreak My Heart is August 5 (tomorrow!), but it’s up for preorder right now.
I thought I’d have a little fun with this post before I get into all the particulars and share a giveaway with you.
Unbreak My Heart was first published in 2013 and since then two novellas and two short stories have sprung to life to keep track Brett and JT. That means I know my guys very well I asked my author/reader group and a few friends to play a little game with me. It’s called “If the characters of Unbreak My Heart were ____ what kind of ____ would they be?” My peeps had to fill in blanks then I was in charge of answering hard questions. Here we go…
1. If the characters in Unbreak My Heart were dogs, what kind of dogs would they be?
Brett Taylor – German Shepherd – loyal, protective, soulful, intelligent, sensitive, bond for life
JT Campbell – Golden Retriever – patient, loyal, friendly, sensitive, intelligent and loves the water
Millie Taylor – Goldendoodle – intelligent, friendly, temperamental, protective, well-groomed
Ray Durant – Border Collie – intelligent, strong work ethic, obedient, loyal, hardy
2. If the UMH characters were superheroes, who would they be?
Brett – Captain Jack Daniels – able to drink whole bottles in one sitting, BUT he will graduate to Captain Sweetness because that’s who’s buried underneath all that Jack
JT – Super-Cool-Man – he’s a surfer, he’s an intellect, he has awesome powers of patience and calm with even the most stubborn captains
Millie – MAMA – that’s the only name she needs to go by and the most important one to her – she’s able to bring grown men to their knees and have them rethinking their decisions with one supercharged look of disappointment – her other powers are love and spot-on sarcasm
Ray – Dusty Rider – a no-nonsense superhero who rides his trusty steed to help those in need – he has the power of taking no shit from anyone
3. If the UMH characters were a hat, what kind of hat would they be.
Brett – I have to go with cowboy hat because I feel like Brett was born with one already stuck on his head – he may be a little dusty but he’s still sturdy and ready to ride
JT – beanie – a casual and comfy knit cap
Millie – Kentucky Derby hat – she can put on the fancy but underneath she’s a mama who loves her son
Walt – cowboy hat with a cattleman crown because he’s always worked on ranches and those cattlemen don’t take no crap
Unbreak My Heart is a book which will take you an unforgettable ride and will leave you wanting more. A must read for all M/M Romance lovers.Parvathy's Review4. If the UMH characters were coffee, what kind of coffee would they be?
Brett – a really strong blend, but with a lot of cream and sugar which accounts for his smooth charm and sweetness
JT – a caramel frappuccino – fresh, pleasant, and chill
Millie – café mochs – sugary but with a strong edge
Ray – expresso – straight up, no fooling around with unnecessary niceties
5. If the UMH characters were horses, what breed would they be?
Brett – Clydesdale – strong, beautiful, well-muscled, gentle but spirited, stubborn – proud but still able to put on a show when needed
JT – Lipizzaner stallion – noble, generous, sensitive, friendly but willing to work
Millie – she may be settled now, but I see her being a strong Mustang back in her day – I think she was a bit of a wild one.
Ray – Arabian – hot-blooded (he has no issues with straightening Brett or anyone else out), eager to please, obedient, hardy
6. If the characters of UMH were musical instruments, what instrument would they be?
Unbreak My Heart was a lovely story of redemption and forgiveness. Author K-Lee Klein digs deep and gives us character that reach beyond the page and into our hearts, lodging themselves there for good.Sammy's ReviewBrett – piano – I want to call Brett a guitar because the acoustic makes the list of his top five faves, but I’m going to say piano – hardworking, highly disciplined (with Brett that was established during his career on the road), collaborator, works well in a group but prefers one-to-one
JT – guitar – versatile and adventurous, refuses to spend a moment doing something he doesn’t love (this is proven in the case of JT’s relationship with his parents and his former career plans) – can be the leader or take a supportive role
Millie – trumpet – talkative and fun, not too shy to make her presence known
Ray – drums – may act rebellious but actually very balanced, not an attention-seeker until he’s given his solo, works hard for the good of the team
There – enough psychologizing (as Brett would say). I hope you found that mildly amusing, but now for the real fun. I’ll be giving away one ebook copy of Unbreak My Heart, or a book from my backlist, to one lucky commenter. It’s simple to enter, just leave your name, email address, and the answer to this question – if you could be a dog, what kind of dog would you be?
I’ll be randomly drawing a winner on August 9 so good luck and have a great week. And whether you’re a new reader to the Unbreak My Heart series or a returning one, I hope you enjoy Brett & JT’s little universe.
Brett Taylor’s world collapsed three years ago when he lost the love of his life. Almost as bad as the grief is the advice he’s starting to get from everyone and their brother, telling him it’s time to move on. They’re flat-out wrong. He left his career as a musician and escaped to his ranch because he needs the peace and quiet, and he’s doing just fine. He doesn’t want anyone invading his memory-filled, booze-fueled solitude.
JT Campbell’s world has been defined by his parents’ money, status, and his own empty relationships, until he’s desperately sick of it. A quest to find something meaningful leads him to Brett’s failing ranch. It’s supposed to be a brief stay. JT never wanted to be anyone’s savior or compete with the ghosts of lovers past. Still, he can’t help wanting this gruff and grieving man.
JT’s mind knows it’s a bad idea, but his heart keeps pushing him to find out what lies beneath Brett’s rough and broken exterior. Brett’s not going to make it easy. JT can only be patient, keep his sense of humor, and hope for the day he may be allowed far enough into Brett’s world to unbreak his heart.

K-lee Klein loves guys with long hair and tattoos, and you’ll often find her front and center at her favorite rock concerts. She has bounced around Western Canada all her life, but will always consider the solitude and beauty of the British Columbian mountains home. Her life is blessed as the proud mother of three now-grown but still spoiled kids, the servant of two bossy felines, and the wife of a truly patient husband.
Her writing muse is terribly temperamental, so to keep him close by and in check, she had him inked on her left calf. The gorgeous, long-haired, mostly naked, kneeling angel that resulted is truly a work of art, although he’s still a handful and hopelessly uncontrollable. She writes on his schedule and inspiration.
K-lee tends to fall easily into obsessions. When something grabs her attention, she jumps into it headfirst with complete abandon. Actors, musicians, superheroes, fictional characters, and brainwashed assassins all hold spots on her cannot-get-enough list. She once followed Thirty Seconds to Mars around the United States and Canada and saw them perform fourteen times that year. Obsession sometimes leads to ideas for her kneeling angel to turn into stories.
Although an introvert in person, she’s extroverted online and has met many wonderful friends there, sometimes with the added fun of meeting them in person at gay romance conferences. She’s grateful for all the people in her life who accept her as she is and support her through her ups and downs as mom, wife, and joyfully obsessed writer.Website Blog GoodReads Twitter Facebook More Author Reviews
