Former cops Doyle and Kord, together now for six months, struggle to keep their fledgling PI business afloat. Kord is unhappy with boring divorce cases, but Doyle will take any case that pays the bills. But things are about to change.
When shop owner Brandon hires them to find his missing business partner, they dive into the case. Experienced investigators, they methodically check every lead: Gary’s new fiancé, family members, business connections, gambling associates, and even Brandon are questioned in an effort to find the missing man. When, Owen, the fiancé produces a letter purportedly from Gary saying he’s away on a buying trip, the investigation is nearly derailed, but Doyle insists they continue the search until the letter is proven genuine.
Just as they hit their stride, someone from an old and violent case finds Kord, and his intentions could be lethal. Fearing the man may harm Doyle, Kord decides to handle things on his own. Distracted now, Kord can’t pull his weight on the missing persons case. But when Gary is found dead, the investigation turns a corner. Even their client, Brandon, may be the murderer.
Things turn violent but Kord, still preoccupied with the old case, fails to help Doyle when he’s needed most. Will they be able to overcome this serious breach that threatens to derail the investigation …and their relationship?
This book completely blew me away. It was such an incredible read. I have to say that Joseph did something in this book that I have always wondered why any author that I have read has not done. I am not going to give anything away but I will say this, one of the main characters, Kord, had me questioning whether I liked him or not after reading this book. I will also say that I have not read the first book in this series, but I will definitely be going back and reading it after reading this one and I will most definitely be reading Sling Shot as soon as it is available to read.
This book is about two men named Doyle and Kord. Both men are former police. Kord was an undercover detective while Doyle was not. But this could be to their advantage. These two men have opened up their own PI Investigation. Though they have not taken off as much as they would like, they are still doing ok. Most of their business so far revolves around following cheaters and such but they hope that as time goes on they will get more interesting cases.
Kord is slowly adjusting to the change in job but it is not always easy. Doyle is constantly helping him when he starts to regress back to being closed off like he has no choice but to be in undercover work. He is slowly learning to open up to Doyle about his fears but at times Doyle still has to push to get Kord to let him in. It is not always easy running a business together as well as being a couple but hey seem to be making it work.
One morning after Kord leaves on a case, Doyle is woken up to someone beating on his front door. This turns out to be the break they may just be looking for. It turns out to be a man named Brandon who has tracked down Doyle to hire them to help find his business partner. Brandon is concerned since he has not heard from him in over a week and wants Doyle and Kord to find him. What starts out as a missing person case quickly turns into so much more. As things start to unfold and suspects in his disappearance start to emerge, the danger of this case increases as well.
While it is supposed to be both Doyle and Kord working on this case together, Kord has another issue arise that he decides he needs to leave Doyle out of. This turns out to be a mistake on Kord’a part because when the issue involves someone from his undercover days turning up again, things quickly spiral out of control. If Kord is not careful he may just lose everything he has worked so hard to achieve in his recent life.
This book was just so good I could not put it down. And I have to say I am still blown away by the turn of events that Joseph spun in this book. It definitely left me questioning Kord on so many levels. I cannot wait to see what Joseph has up his sleeve for the next book that is for sure and in the meantime I will be going back and reading the first book right away. I definitely recommend this book to others.
