Once upon a time Nicholas Beckert was the boy who stole kisses from Jared Kumpel beneath the bleachers. Now Jared’s a pediatrician and Nick is the hospital CEO who won’t glance his way. But everything changes when they’re stranded alone in a hospital elevator. Ten years of cold shoulders melt away, and old passions rekindle into hot flames. Once out of the elevator, Jared has no intention of letting Nick get away. He wants a full, open relationship, which is a step further than Nick is willing to go, and it looks like the same arguments that drove them apart in high school might resurface. Jared’s determined not to let it happen again. He won’t order Nick from his shell—he’ll listen to what he needs to feel safe. Maybe this time he can prescribe his lover a happily ever after.

Ah, this series was so wonderful. I will admit the order of favorite for me was 2, 1, 3.

In this book we get the story of Nick and Jared. They met in school and began a friendship that turned into more, but despite how attached they got, Jared had too much pressure from his family about racial issues and Nick was securely behind a closet door that was never intended to open.

Twenty years later Jared is the Copper Point Medical Pediatrician and Nick is the head of the facility. Both have conveniently had nothing more than a civil relationship until recently when all of Jared’s friends have paired off and left him feeling lonely.

When someone in town shows interest, Nick suddenly feels like he can’t let Jared move on.

One of my favorite tropes is forced proximity. I love it because emotions run high when fear is involved and it’s easy to catch feelings. The elevator scene in this book was perfect. I loved how it forced the two to finally deal with decades of pent up feelings and guilt.

The actual story here was lovely. I thought Jared was so sweet and there was a scene towards the end that just broke my heart for him. He’s so compassionate and loving and when he’s hurt, it shows. That is wonderful writing.

This wasn’t my favorite of the trio of couples because of how much Nick’s hesitation caused agony for Jared. It hurt to read, but then add in his family’s racist issues and his solitude and it was a recipe for heartbreak for this reader.

Even so, this series was excellent and I love how the hospital took care of their employees and how the entire town of Copper Point ends up supporting them in the end.

Reading has become such a huge part of my life as an adult. I love the escape, but I also try to take something from each story for myself. I am a lover of words. I love dialogue. I love a slow burn and a happy ever after.
