Interview – Claire Thompson

Jessewave interviews renowned author Claire Thompson

Hello Claire, thank you for agreeing to be interviewed by Jessewave. This is an honour and a pleasure. Your books have been very well received by readers and reviewers alike and we’re really looking forward to this interview –

What would you like your readers to know about Claire Thompson the writer and the person?
What genres do you write and why?

CT: I am an author of erotica and erotic romance. I write about the romance of erotic submission, as well as the darker side of BDSM. In addition, I write male/male erotic romance and BDSM and paranormal erotic romance. I have published over thirty novels to date, with no plans of stopping—ever! Recently I’ve entered the heady world of ménages a trois with Two Masters for Alex. After I finish my current project I’m going to start a second one.

Blind Faith
was released by Ellora’s Cave on April 19, 2008 Can you summarize the book in 50 words or less?

CT: Aidan is blinded and disfigured in a car accident. His on-again, off-again lover, Zane, returns from an extended trip abroad, shocked to discover Aidan’s situation. This story explores how both men come to grips with the limitations and, surprisingly, the new avenues of freedom and understanding Aidan’s handicap creates between them.

When did you know that writing was your passion?

CT: I started writing erotica and erotic romance back in 1996 as a way to explore my own sexual fantasies in a safe, secret way. When I dared to share my writing with a few close friends, they encouraged me to try and get my work published. For the past few years I’ve been writing male/male erotic romance and having a great time entering the minds and hearts of strong, sexy men who aren’t afraid to be vulnerable. Passion is a good word to describe what I do. Obsession would be another. I simply cannot not write. It’s in my blood, it’s in my bones. It’s what I must do and what I love. I’m very, very lucky that people actually want to read what I write!

Who/what was your inspiration for writing and where do you get ideas for your books?

CT: My own desire to understand my experience, plus an active imagination and very active libido were all inspirations! The ideas come from my own twisted little mind, and also from friends and readers who say, “What if you wrote about X? I’d like to read that!” Reader feedback is a huge inspiration—I love knowing what I write reaches people and sometimes moves them or affects them in a positive way. That’s thrilling to me.

Which of your novels has been your most successful to date in terms of sales?

CT: My biggest seller to date has been one of my recent releases, Two Masters for Alex (the BDSM ménage). The first month sales were higher than any other new release to date. I can only surmise the combination (Two gay lovers in a D/s relationship, willing to bring in a bratty, sexy female as a sub to enhance their BDSM play) provides a little something for everyone! The reviews have been extremely positive as well.

Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?

CT: Write, write, write, and write! Get your story going and run with it. If it seems to be flagging, write an outline to try and jump start your muse. Write about what moves you, what matters to you. Your passion will come through and readers will connect. If it’s not fun, don’t do it. Life’s too short! Don’t write for a particular genre or “craze” just because you think it will sell. Write what moves you—what matters to you.

Before you submit anything, proofread the hell out of it! Print it out because it’s easier to catch errors on the page than on the screen. Once you complete the manuscript, let it sit a few weeks and “gel”. Come back to it with a fresh eye. Read the dialog aloud to see if it rings true. Stilted dialog throws a reader out of the story. Don’t get discouraged with rejections!! (Boy is THAT easy to say but not to do!). Remember, J K Rowling was refused by a number of publishers before her Harry Potter series found a home!

What would you say is the most difficult part of the writing process?

CT: For me the hardest part is getting a good plot going with a hook that will capture the reader’s interest. The first few chapters are always the toughest for me. Then I get into a groove and just take off (hopefully!!).

What are you working on now that your readers can look forward to?

CT: The novel is called Switch. It’s an m/m D/s love story. Dane Bishop is reigning king of the Austin underground gay BDSM scene, holding court at an exclusive hardcore BDSM club called Boot Camp. When he meets Nathan Levi, a quiet, unassuming sculptor, his world is turned upside down. Nathan, who can sense Dane’s submissive potential, despite his protests that he’s all dom, takes Dane on a sensual journey that presses the erotic envelope and enslaves his heart along with his body.

You have a contest on your website at the moment. Would you like to tell us and your readers what it’s about?

CT: I want reader ideas for my next ménage a trois. I open this contest to your readers as well. Here is the task: It can be m/f/m (that means both guys are straight) or m/m/f (that means the guys are bi or gay – the main focus of the ménage but there’s still a woman in the mix). OR – we could even make it m/m/m! (maybe two are gay and one is curious…?) Send me a few sentences outlining what you’d like to see in a ménage. Go into as little or as much detail as you’d like.

Here is the prize: If your idea just gets my juices flowing, even if I don’t use it right away, I’ll send you a free ebook download. If I like your idea well enough to begin work on my new novel, I’ll send you a signed copy of Golden Boy/Golden Man (limited to participants within North America.)

How can your readers and fans get in touch with you?

CT: My email address is I answer all emails and I love hearing from readers.

I have a website ( ) and a monthly newsletter containing all the latest on my work, plus contests and other fun information. If you would like to join the newsletter mailing list, just click the link at the bottom on the home page.
