Summary Review

The story of the first year of a relationship, told using fun sexy flashbacks.

BLURB

Actor MacAlester Kerr wanders into a whole new world of pampering and pleasure when his director sends him to Evan’s Heaven for a pedicure. When Mac meets the spa’s owner, Evan York, he finds himself head over heels and up to his eyebrows as Evan spoils him like no one ever has before.

Whether it’s a paraffin manicure, an herbal body wrap, or even a sugar waxing, Evan makes every treatment special with his own brand of kinky accompaniment. But when Mac wants to take things farther than Evan ever expected, will it lead to trouble in paradise?

Reprint: This novella was originally published in the Dreamspinner Press anthology Size Still Matters.

REVIEW

Mac is an actor filming on location on a tropical island. Due to weather delays he’s unable to get back home and so can’t be with his lover, Evan, on their first anniversary. When he receives a basket from Evan he’s delighted to find it’s filled with things that bring back good memories of their time together.

From their first meeting when Mac’s movie director sends him to Evan’s spa for a pedicure to the present time, the memories of their times together are sexy, fun and often sweet too. As he pulls each item out of the basket we see the progression of their relationship and although each memory is basically centered around a sex scene the story remains interesting. Mac and Evan are both likable characters and I really enjoyed the dynamics of their relationship and the progression of it over the course of the story. Kinky and with a slight D/s feel the sex scenes are hot and plentiful but don’t overwhelm the story.

What I liked…

I really enjoyed the uncomplicated storyline and I found both Mac and Evan fun and engaging characters. There’s no angst, no annoying exes or mean family members in this story. Just two men meeting, falling in lust and slowly realizing it’s love that’s keeping them together. There is also quite a bit of humor throughout the story. Evan’s use of the pet name Little Mac for a certain portion of Mac’s body was a source of consternation for Mac but also something that he, and I, found amusing and enjoyed.

Another thing that I really liked was the description of the spa treatments. Pedicures, massages, hot stone treatments, Egyptian mud facials and gommage applications. By the time I finished this story I wanted nothing more than to spend a couple of days at a spa.

What I didn’t like…

I would have liked to have seen some of the memories of them together not having so much focus on sex. Perhaps going about their everyday lives, spending time together outside of the spa and not always ending up having sex.

Overall…

I was really entertained by this charming story. The author’s use of flashbacks worked well and the story kept me engaged throughout. The book is well written with fun likable characters who I enjoyed reading about. While the plot is simple it is also fun and sexy as well as sweet and tender at times. It’s an easy read with a nice romantic ending.

  • Nice review, Lily. 🙂 I’ll probably give this one a shot, sooner or later.

One question, though, and it’s not directed at you, specifically. If anyone can offer up an answer, I’d be thrilled.

What on Earth is that guy in the robe sitting on? Because it sort of looks like a salon chair, but there’s that weird bowl-thingy at the bottom, and I’ve never seen anything like that. It’s vaguely toilet-like. LOL

    • Thanks, Tis 🙂

ROFL, it does look strange on the cover. It’s supposed to be a pedicure chair although the ones I’ve seen in real life are much bigger and don’t look quite so much like a toilet. 😀

  • Great review. It sounds like a nice ‘feel good’ read. I’ll have to add it to my TBR list.

  • Great review, Lily. This sounds like a nice short book to read if I’m in the mood for something sweet and sexy.
