THE BLURB

Another glimpse into the lives of Detective Max Fielding and his cross-dressing lover, dress designer Skyler Trent, takes us back in time to their first meeting. While acting as best man at a fellow cop’s wedding, Max meets Skyler at the fancy reception. He becomes instantly smitten, only to discover that the lovely Skyler isn’t exactly what “she” appears to be.

Fast-forwarding to their ten-month anniversary, Max gives Skyler a special gift and learns something surprising about his beautiful, self-assured lover in return. Another romantic, warm-hearted story for fans of the Max & Skyler series.

Max & Skyler Series

THE REVIEW

Skyler and Max have a place in my heart forever because they are such a wonderful couple and every time I meet them I fall more in love. Only Words (Max and Skyler 1)Β  was my introduction to this delightful pair and I couldn’t wait to read Any Excuse (Max & Skyler 2) which took their romance up a couple of levels, from falling in love to meeting Max’s associates, and Max coming out at an awards dinner. In this newest story we’re permitted to be on the sidelines as Max and Skyler meet for the first time……

Ten months ago Max attended the society wedding of his best friend Detective Paul Hiller and his new bride Anna-Sophia Mariana who Max had dated briefly. After the speeches were over he went to find what he considered real booze and looked down from his bar stool and “the prettiest little thing he’d ever seen in his life” was standing in front of him. Max had met his destiny, Skyler Trent.

She had a cute, black bob, parted neatly in the center, and impossibly wide, green eyes. Petite, she wore a pale blue dress, low-cut in the front but still quite demure. Legs like nobody’s business, long and lean, the hem of the dress falling at mid-thigh. On her pretty face she wore only enough makeup to accentuate the big eyes, a generous mouth and high cheekbones.

This is an abbreviated version of their first conversational exchange

“Do you mind if I join you?”
“Be my guest …. Can I get you a drink? My treat, of course.”
“It’s an open bar”
“Hey, it’s the thought that counts”
“Indeed”

Max was smitten and it wasn’t long before they exchanged names. They danced and Max couldn’t figure out why his friend Paul seemed so amused at his expense, other than the fact he had two left feet. Obviously he wasn’t in on the joke, and it was left to Skyler who realized that he really didn’t have a clue about what he was getting into, to enlighten Max in his own way. πŸ™‚ To say that Max was upset was putting it mildly, but by the time he rushed to the bathroom and Skyler followed him he realized that his life would never be the same again.

They decided to go to Skyler’s place to continue getting to know each other, and it was then that Max realized what a talented seamstress his new friend was as he looked at some of his creations. However he was more interested in another creation – Skyler’s body. The sex was a lot hotter than Max expected, and blew his encounters with women out of the water, which would explain why those affairs never lasted, but conversely he wasn’t comfortable having sex with a man. It was several months before he got over his initial reaction but Skyler stuck with him, and now here they were, celebrating their 10 month anniversary. Max presented Skyler with what he hoped would be the best present ever to commemorate the occasion, but Skyler’s reaction was not joyful.

He quickly learned that Skyler didn’t exactly love the kind of surprise he had in mind as he was more into Lindor Truffles and lacy underthings from Victoria Secrets.

Skyler’s deepest secret and vulnerabilities are revealed in this episode.

In addition to the wonderful writing by Acer Adamson (aka Jaye Valentine) it’s the characters that enthrall me. Max is one of the toughest cops in his precinct but Skyler can melt his heart without breaking a sweat and Max just wants to make the love of his life happy. Seeing them together always makes me smile whenever Max bumbles his way into one relationship mess after another.

If you loved the first two stories about Maxwell and Skyler I know you will be anxious to find out how they met and what secrets are revealed as the layers are peeled back. I can’t recommend this book more highly and I look forward to the novella that I hope will be released very soon.

Highly Recommended.

  • I loved the stories, although I admit it is disturbing, that they always end as soon as you start reading… πŸ˜‰
I think there is a very nice dynamic between Max and Skyler…

    • I know they are very short Sven. πŸ˜€ However, as I mentioned before, short and sweet is much better than long and boring. We’ve been promised a novella starring Max and Skyler and I keep hoping it will be soon.

  • Thanks Wave! I just grabbed a copy and read it. I’m glad Skyler came around to his surprise. If my SO had done that to me I would have run in the opposite direction. Lol.

    • Hi Ailish

Max and Skyler have so many fans. I only found out last evening when another fan, Brian, emailed me. I have been so busy lately that I haven’t been visiting my regular websites.

We’re all greedy and I can’t wait for the novella that Jaye promised to write so long ago. πŸ™‚

      • Hi Wave! Great review!

I *adore* this series, so I was ecstatic when I stumbled upon this release last night. This one is my new favorite…but I say that every time a new Max & Skyler is released. haha

For short stories, these characters pack a punch and manage to have nuances that I sometimes feel are missing from characters in novels. Skyler’s mannerisms, one-liners, and ability to wrap Max around her finger gets me every time. I never get tired of this couple. Goes to show what a good author Acer (Jaye) is, IMO.

I cannot wait for a longer format.

        • Thanks Brian for pointing me to this story. I’m forever in your debt. πŸ™‚ Because I was so busy I hadn’t been paying attention to new releases except from the bigger publishers.

I just love Skyler and Max and I keep hoping that Acer will be releasing the long awaited novella soon.

  • I love Max & Skyler so much. They are my most favorite couple ever. I can’t count how many times I re-read the stories already, I am so happy that there is a new installment now. Max & Skyler stories will always be a 5 star read for me and I can’t understand why anybody would think different about it. πŸ˜‰

    • Hi Anja
      Thanks for commenting.

I, too, love Max and Skyler a lot but usually the books I rate as 5 stars have a lot more complexity. I’m looking forward to the novella which we have been promised but I have no idea what my rating will be until I read the book. πŸ™‚
