Review Summary: Giving a familiar fairy tale a delicious twist, two “gifted” men make the point, “we always have a choice.”
Blurb: Not everyone can be a prince. Sometimes an everyman will do.
Review: First off–I love the blurb–gives nothing away–Ms. Castillo Price–if I had not loved you before, I would now! How lovely that I get to do the honors and unfold this story for you. Oh dear reader this one was just pure fun!
Rapunzel, Rapunzel let down your hair….
Except, in the case of Locks of Love, Rapunzel is a hot Russian man named Micha with ginger locks who has been captured by a most foul man they call the Barber. And our prince happens to be a locksmith by the name of Hal who has a habit of talking to doors in order for them to open up under his less than skilled hands.
I know–you are wondering what kind of crazy story we have wandered into, aren’t you? Well, dear reader, this is a story most magical, and riveting from beginning to end.
These characters all live in a world where each one has a unique “talent”. For Hal it is indeed the ability to talk doors into opening for him. So, rather than become a burglar–an easy and more lucrative job, Hal opts to work for A-1 Locksmiths–Hal is a good guy.
Micha loves his hair and that the giving of his gift only enhances its growth. Micha’s gift? Well after mind blowing sex, it is actually the euphoric feeling of total and complete happiness–a peace beyond understanding-a rare gift indeed and one the Barber wants for his very own.
So, Poor Micha is imprisoned much like our dear Rapunzel of yore and it is up to Hal as to whether or not Micha is ever freed.
First off, the story? A real stroke of genius. I kid you not. Who can take a simple fairy tale and weave a new world from it–one in which the key players come with unusual gifts that creates a whole second level to the telling of the tale?
When was the last time you put down a short story and thought to yourself, “how many letters can I write to the author begging her to make this into a novel?” I wrote five of them before I even sat down to do this review.
Yes. this little gem is that good! Jordan Castillo Price takes a simple plot line, twists it, adds a dash of hot sex, a remarkably kind and fresh hero, a damsel who you ache to know more about and a villain who you really just want to see dead and mashes them together to create a whimsical story that has a bit of action, a dash of love, and a whole lot of fun.
And running through this tale, comes the thought that no matter what, we are each given gifts and it is up to us what we do with them–we always have a choice. I really love that idea. Call me an eternal optimist, but I like the idea this story gives us that we can change the outcome of our story by the choices we make.
Dear Reader–surely you will want to pick up this bedtime story and check it our on your own. I give you Locks of Love by Jordan Castillo Price, a must read by anyone’s standard!
