A Guest Review by Sammy
Review Summary: A fun little sip that shows you can’t judge a book by its cover.
Blurb: Brody has been admiring the new guy at the engineering firm where he works for the last six months. Wallace is all the things Brody isn’t—confident, stunning, sex-on-legs. Oh, and straight. Working alongside Wallace is the highlight of Brody’s week, and fantasizing about Wallace is the full extent of his sex life.
But Wallace has other ideas. The moment he joined the firm, Wallace knew he’d have trouble keeping his hands off Brody. In an effort to stay professional at work, he’s kept his sexuality to himself, but that’s about to change.
When he hears Brody say that seeing the latest project leave the premises is “better than sex,” Wallace knows he has to take action. Its time someone taught Brody how good sex can be—especially when it’s served up with a generous helping of leather.
Review: sigh…blurb overkill. I cannot add anything to this blurb without giving you the entire story except to say that this sizzling little short once again proves that Kim Dare writes a nice BDSM story. Admittedly the bdsm element in this particular tale, Better Than Sex is a bit tame but still the sex scenes pack a bit of heat and are delightful to read.
Unfortunately it was the in-between that fell a bit flat for me. I really enjoyed Brody’s character, his slight naiveté, his uncertainty over whether he was, in fact, reading the signals Wallace was giving off correctly, these things added up to a very sweet submissive male who one could just fall in love with a bit.
Unfortunately I did not feel the same way about Wallace. He had just the right amount of arrogance that suited his dominant nature but even though we were privy to the thoughts running through his mind I wasn’t all that smitten with his character. I felt he was a bit condescending and even uncaring when it came to guiding Brody through his first experience with bdsm.
I honestly failed to see the emotional connection between these two men and that is almost certainly a hallmark of Kim Dare’s work–that near insta-love that she does so well. Instead we were given a glimpse into the possibility of a future for these two but still left wondering if this might not end up being a one night stand. And, coming to expect a good wrap-up to most, if not all, of Kim Dare’s stories, this one fell short of the mark.
Still and all, it is a hot little snippet and If you want a tiny escape, do pick up Better Than Sex by Kim Dare. I think I will hold of till the next story by this lovely author comes along.
