THIRDS: Book One

When homicide detective Dexter J. Daley’s testimony helps send his partner away for murder, the consequences—and the media frenzy—aren’t far behind. He soon finds himself sans boyfriend, sans friends, and, after an unpleasant encounter in a parking garage after the trial, he’s lucky he doesn’t find himself sans teeth. Dex fears he’ll get transferred from the Human Police Force’s Sixth Precinct, or worse, get dismissed. Instead, his adoptive father—a sergeant at the Therian-Human Intelligence Recon Defense Squadron otherwise known as the THIRDS—pulls a few strings, and Dex gets recruited as a Defense Agent.

Dex is determined to get his life back on track and eager to get started in his new job. But his first meeting with Team Leader Sloane Brodie, who also happens to be his new jaguar Therian partner, turns disastrous. When the team is called to investigate the murders of three HumaniTherian activists, it soon becomes clear to Dex that getting his partner and the rest of the tightknit team to accept him will be a lot harder than catching the killer—and every bit as dangerous.

Dexter J. Daley is an HPF (Human Police Force) detective. Recently he testified against his Human partner in a murder trial and now he’s a media target. Soon his boyfriend breaks up with him, he gets beat up by cops and is “promoted” to the THIRDS Defense Agent.

Therian-Human Intelligence Recon Defense Squadron is a military-funded agency where high ranking Human officers are paired with high ranking Therian officers. The intention of THIRDS is to promote justice for all species.

Dex joins the Destructive Delta team, that takes the more violent crimes, and is paired with the Team Leader, Agent Sloane Broodie. The team still hasn’t healed after loss of their teammate, Gabe, who was Sloane’s partner, and Sloane is pissed at Dex for trying to be Gabe’s replacement. However, Dex charms his way in with time and no matter how hard Sloane tries he can’t keep resisting him.

While Sloane is more of a cool, calm and collected type of guy, Dex is loud, vibrant and funny. The chemistry between the two of them was amazing. I enjoyed the entertaining banter between the team. I loved the brotherly bond between Cael and Dex and I especially loved Dex. He made me laugh a lot and I couldn’t get enough of him.

“I am fucking charming!” Dex shouted, his entire face going beet red. “I am the most charming motherfucker you will ever know, so kiss my perfectly perky ass!”

After some consideration, Sloane cocked his head to one side and shrugged. “I’ve seen better.”

“Oh, now you’re insulting my ass?”

Even though the villain wasn’t hard to guess, I still really enjoyed this book. Overall, it’s a great read and I think it would make an awesome badass movie.

Highly recommended!
