Kyle Decker knew dating Jesse McGovern would change his life. Young and in love, and with the Supreme Court ruling in favor of marriage equality, the world is theirs to conquer.
But their victorious Pride celebration ends in a savage attack, brutally demonstrating they’re far from equal. Instead of wedding planning, Jesse and Kyle face an arduous recovery and a shattered sense of their place in the world, their once-promising future suddenly something to survive.
While Jesse struggles with a permanent injury and its emotional aftermath, Kyle’s single-minded focus on Jesse’s recovery is the only thing keeping his demons at bay…for now. What was a once-in-a-lifetime kind of love is now full of lies and resentment.
With their dreams tattered and forever changed, trusting anyone—even each other—is daunting. So how can they have faith in twelve strangers on a jury? They’ve already learned the hard way it only takes a moment to become truly defenseless.
The name of this book pretty much describes it all. I have never had a book that has affected me so deeply before. I believe I have cried more reading this book then I have ever cried reading another. This book completely broke my heart in so many ways, and it touched me deeply in so many other ways.
I do have that say that one of the things that needs to be stated up front about this book is there needs to be a TRIGGER WARNING FOR EXTREME VIOLENCE, GAY BASHING, EMTIONAL ABUSE AS WELL AS PHYSICAL ABUSE, and DEROGATORY GAY SLURS. I believe this is something that definitely needs to be stated because this is a very graphic book so much so it was hard not feel like I was right there in the book with the characters through the whole ordeal.
Jesse and Kyle both captured my heart from the get go of this book. The horrific events these two endured and had to go through was dang believable and realistic that while reading this book I felt every emotion these two men and their friends and family faced on the aftermath of the violent attack they went through just because they are gay and love one another.
I have to say that I have so much respect for AJ Rose for the way this book played out. This is not a book about happily ever after a and love concurring all. It is a book about the reality of what these two men went through. It is a book that did not sugar coat the pain, the anger, resentment towards each other, the fear, the guilt, and of course the love these two men both felt throughout their whole ordeal and the aftermath of it.
This book is like a looking glass in my opinion of the before, during, and after of what Jesse and Kyle had to indure. I personally felt all the emotions, and there was many of them, that both the characters felt throughout this book. That in itself is a big win in my opinion, having the ability to draw a reader in like that.
This book will truly be with me for a very long time. I will not forget it and how it made me feel and I believe that others that will read it will feel the same way also. It is an amazing read but definitely not for the faint of heart. Definitely a book I would suggest that goes on people’s high priority reading list.
