Things are going well for androgynous model Ollie Petroskovic, ex-Marine Kade Alme, and their business, Haven Investigations, until rock star Jacob Elias shows up in need of their services… and trouble follows.
Jacob is a playboy with a serious penchant for kink, slaves, and sex toys. He’s also Ollie’s ex—and all that implies. With the media exploiting his personal life, a stalker sending blood-soaked “gifts,” a bumbling security team, and a family he can’t trust as far as he could throw them, Jacob is in desperate need of a bodyguard for his latest tour, and Kade can’t refuse.
While Kade deals with new doubts about his partnership with Ollie and struggles with reminders of his war injuries, Jacob’s stalker escalates from blackmail and threats to murder. As Kade and Ollie work to keep Jacob safe and find the culprit behind the attack, a web of family secrets, lies, and abuse slowly emerges, leading up to a final confrontation that they might not walk away from—and that will have lasting repercussions for Kade and his relationship with Ollie.
I have to applaud an author who’s willing to put it all out on front street. And Kasey certainly does when she warns, up front, that this is going to end as a doozy.
For all those who groaned over the teaser at the end of Model Citizen for being a cliffhanger. This is a cliffhanger.
But let’s discuss this, shall we? Whether you call it a “teaser” or a “cliffhanger”, and it may be small, large, trivial, or profound, but if the audience is left in suspense over any part and has to wait for closure – that makes it a cliffhanger.
And boy does this story have one.
Told entirely from Kade’s POV this time, we get some backstory on how things were for him before he was able to get to Ollie, and it’s heartbreaking.
I absolutely loved the fantastic relationship between Kade and Ollie, I mean I love how they fit together and how well Kade takes care of Ollie.
I really enjoyed the very interesting mystery, I felt like it is tightly woven, and there is some good action that helps the momentum. There are breadcrumbs throughout that give you a good idea of who’s behind it all, but in all it’s definitely well done.
While the relationships in Model Citizen were more about Ollie’s friendships, particularly with Will and B, Model Bodyguard definitely centers around Kade and Ollie, with some Tomas and Ty sprinkled throughout, but I missed Will and B in this one.
I have to say I didn’t expect so little time spent on Nathan’s storyline. It feels unfinished, so a definitive conclusion for that is still outstanding.
But the biggest negative, for me, of course, is the huge, major, profound, and massive cliffhanger with no clear timeline on when book 3 will be released to clear everything up.
I’ll be honest, I probably wouldn’t have picked this up without also having the next in hand if I had known beforehand about the cliffie, but I’m sort of glad I did, because I really, really enjoyed this. I just also really, really want the next one. Like now.
