Solitary mystery writer Julian Wilkes doesn’t want a pet, but his sister persuades him to visit Lingwood Animal Rescue, where he is immediately taken with a large ginger tabby cat. Before he can settle into the joys of cat ownership, however, he discovers something very unusual about his new companion.
Macavity Birch is cursed. By day he is a large tabby cat. At night he can be himself—a human male with ginger hair and oddly yellow eyes. He didn’t mean to end up in the animal rescue, but he never meant any harm when playing the prank that resulted in his curse, either. Happily, Julian adopts him. But while exploring his host’s home, he discovers the diary of a long-dead relative.
Unfortunately, not all of Mac’s ancestors are dead and buried. His great-great-great-grandmother is very much alive, and she’s a powerful witch who doesn’t take kindly to the sharing of family secrets. When Mac reveals himself to Julian in order to save him from bigger trouble, he achieves just the opposite, plunging Julian deeper into a magical mystery with him
This is a sweet and wonderful book. The perfect book to read when you don’t have a lot of time, you love cats, and you love weres or shapeshifters.
This story is about Julian who adopts a cat from animal rescue not knowing that he has adopted a cat shapeshifter. This cat, Mac, has been cursed by his witch aunt that forces him to become human from dusk till dawn. He takes advantage of this by raiding the fridge while Julian is asleep because he hasn’t eaten all day. He doesn’t like kibble. He also drinks Julian’s beer and eats his roasted chicken. Julian is surprised in the morning thinking that he had the beer and chicken while being distracted by research.
One day Mac is forced to reveal his secret during a time where Julian thought his cat had run away. Mac feels awful that he distressed Julian so much because he knows how much Julian really cares about his new cat. Mac is surprised how well Julian accepts this reveal. The witch aunt arrives and upsets their delicate balance. Julian gets put under a witches spell for a short time but surprisingly this turns into another reveal for the two friends. They discover their love for each other.
This story is entertaining and made me smile and giggle. I love how Julian talks to the cat expecting it to answer and he sort of does. When Julian pets the cat he sometimes purrs, but this cat does not like to purr. So most of the time he forces himself not to.
The only criticism I have for this story is that we did not get background on Julian. We did on Mac. He even told his own story and background. I also wish there was more of an ending. It felt like it got cut off way too soon. Otherwise, this story was very well written and the characters were believable, real and came to life. I also love the humor and entertainment that I got from the story. I do recommend this book.
