Foster brothers Josh and Morgan aren’t related by blood, but they are each others only family. When sharp-tongued Morgan gets thrown out of their latest foster home, protective ‘big brother’ Josh runs after him. At eighteen, they’re utterly alone, penniless and hungry. Morgan is quick to turn to sex work, and despite his hesitation, Josh agrees to act as his bodyguard. Lusty and shameless, Morgan revels in getting paid to do what he likes best – having as much sex as possible with as many men as possible. Meanwhile, Josh is tortured with jealousy, because he’s been secretly in love with Morgan for years.
It’s not long before the two find trouble with the law. They flee across the country, Morgan plying his trade and Josh struggling with his complicated feelings, until they find work at an expensive sex club. As security, Josh has to use all his strength to protect Morgan from the people who want to use and abuse him – but when a wealthy and sadistic client takes a special liking to Morgan, Josh will be forced to admit his true feelings are anything but brotherly.
I’ve been trying to figure out how to write a review for this book. By no means was everything about this book perfect but I write reviews based on a couple of components: writing style, character development, the sequence of events, etc. My Brother’s Keeper was my first read by M. Corvidae. I borrowed it as part of my Kindle Unlimited membership. I discover a lot of new to me authors via this feature.
What’s the book about? Morgan and Josh are foster brothers. Morgan is gay, and Josh is… well Josh isn’t sure what he is. Perhaps bicurious, perhaps bisexual, perhaps a modified version of demisexual. In any case, Josh and Morgan are close. They’re about to turn eighteen, but things hit a rough patch. Their foster father comes home to find Morgan in a compromising position with their foster parents’ son, Dave. Morgan is immediately kicked out, but Josh won’t leave him, so he takes off with Morgan. This is the start of our story. We have two young boys trying to figure out how to make ends meet. They still haven’t finished high school, they don’t have jobs, they have to figure out how to sustain an income to keep food in their bellies and a roof over their heads. Morgan, who really likes sex figures, why not do something he loves AND get paid for it. Josh obviously doesn’t like this plan. He thinks it’s dangerous and it promotes an environment where Morgan could get hurt. His solution? To protect Morgan, he’ll become his bouncer of sorts. Make sure he’s okay and not being harmed while servicing johns. This works for a bit until life on the streets earning menial money isn’t enough. Morgan accepts a job at a strip club and Josh accepts a position as a security guard so he can of course keep an eye on Morgan. Oh… things get tricky.
This story took me on a quite the ride. It was kinky as hell. Morgan was quite the cheeky boy. His sexual tastes were yum. Josh, oh Josh. I’ve come to find that I really enjoy a friends to lovers trope. Where one-half of the union has no clue that the other is secretly pining after them. Josh was in so deep when it came to Morgan, but he could never tell him. He was afraid to break their brotherly bond. These two went through some serious hurdles, but they held on to each other.
I was enjoying the heck out of this story until about the 75%-80% mark, and then annoyance crept in. I ultimately wanted to give it three stars at this stage for some insanity that just didn’t jive with the momentum of the book. Authors have every right to pen characters as they see fit, but I was honestly doing a double-take at my Kindle. The story jumped the shark for a bit; however, the ending completely made up for it. I’m a sucker for an HEA and this story despite being full of WTF moments ended on quite a sweet note.
Five-stars for the overall experience (of course the kinky sex didn’t hurt).Buy Link Amazon Global Author Link GoodReads More Author Reviews
