Left at the altar by his long-time lover, Spencer, and in desperate need of quality health insurance, Dane Archer can’t say no when his best man and best friend, Gideon DeLuca, steps in. But Dane and Gideon have history, tangled and passionate and complicated.
After seventeen years of cat and mouse, Gideon has realized Dane isn’t the kind of man who ever wants to be caught, and he’s stopped playing Dane’s game.
For Dane, it’s never been a game, but sexual fidelity isn’t his strong suit. Love is too beautiful for limits, something he’s never been able to get Gideon the control freak to understand. Now Dane has nothing but limits, including the timeline on his paper-only marriage to Gideon.
Gideon’s the only person Dane trusts enough to lean on, and Gideon will do anything to get Dane through this crisis. Anything but fall for Dane again.
Living together forces Dane and Gideon to stop circling and face what’s been between them all these years. They just don’t know if they have the power or the time to make things right.
What they do know is that they’re not ready for it to be over.
“Take a Chance on It” by K.A Mitchell is the third installment in the “Ready or Knot” series. Dane and Gideon are best friends of Theo and Jax, whose story we got in the previous books. This book can be read as a standalone but it gets a little confusing trying to get a grip on the various characters and the friendship dynamics. So my advice, read the previous books before starting this one. It will help in getting along with the flow of the story from the start.
Dane and Gideon have history. They have been in and out of each others bed throughout the entire duration of their friendship. Dane does not believe in marriage or commitment and has an open relationship with his long time partner, Spencer. Whereas, Gideon has always been in love with Dane. Gideon knows that Dane can’t give him the commitment or the monogamous/exclusive love he yearns for, so he has suffered in silence. After getting diagnosed with cancer, Dane decides to get married to Spencer but on the wedding day, he gets left at the altar. To help Dane continue getting his treatment, Gideon decides to marry him so that Dane can take advantage of his medical insurance. So now they are under one roof and buried feelings and unspoken sentiment is just waiting below the surface to emerge and finally nudge their friendship towards the love they both are aware of but afraid to express.
Dane is quite a complicated character. He does not believe in monogamy or being in love with only one person, but he has secretly been in love with Gideon for all these years too. He was aware of Gideon’s feelings for him but had kept stringing him along coz he didn’t know how to let go. So after their fake marriage when he experiences the future they can have together, he realizes that Gideon is all he needs to be happy. I was a little annoyed at Dane for being so selfish but he did get his act together at the end so I was mollified.
“I love you. I’m in love with you.”Dane’s thumb brushed Gideon’s lips, and he always had, always would, feel that touch deeper than skin. “I get it. Believe me. Facing mortality gave me a whole new perspective.”“I’m probably going to fuck it up, but I want this with you. No escape clauses, all in. Please give me a chance to prove it.”
Gideon is always hiding his real feelings under his “take charge” mask. He knows that if he reveals his sappy feelings, Dane is sure to run so he has always hidden his love. I really respected Gideon’s character for the way he handles Dane’s sickness and helps him cope with it. It takes a lot to be with someone whom you love wholeheartedly and know that your feelings will never get reciprocated. And Gideon does that for seventeen years*phew* I was so happy when he finally gets his man at the end.
Dane’s cancer treatment and the way he copes with it is written very realistically. I got teary eyed when he gets his head shaved. Really loved Gideon at that time for providing such a “no-judgement/no-pity” support for Dane.
This read is emotional and a little frustrating. I guarantee you will get annoyed with Dane in various degrees while reading it but the ending was worth all the suffering. Fans of this series should not miss out on this one!!!
