“Because love is the easiest way to control someone and I needed a way to control you.”
Still mending a broken heart, Matthew has spent a year avoiding incubi and their army of hunters.
Now he has a new goal: lift the shroud on his past. Why had he been turned and abandoned by his sire? Why didn’t he feel the initial bond between sire and child that vampires experience? Who were his parents, and why had they given him up at birth?
Frustrated by dead ends, his luck changes when a teenage girl tracks him down. She’s strange, socially awkward, and she can see the future. Matthew’s future. She’ll help him if he agrees to save her from the darkness…from Tarrick.
With the incubi armies closing in, a mysterious protector appears, swearing his fealty to Matthew. He’s ancient, seductive, and cursed—unable to explain why he keeps calling Matthew ‘my prince’.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!! Okay, not that I got that out of my system, this was a fantastic read and I am hooked! I am totally left now waiting for the next volume in the series, which cannot come fast enough. This story is full of potential spoilers, so this review won’t have a lot of detail. If you have any questions, I am more than happy to answer them.
Please keep in mind that unlike the last book, Tarrick is not in this volume as often he was in the last. I am not saying he is still not a vital piece of the story; more so, we are introduced to a few more characters in which this volume revolves around. There is Samantha, the Oracle; Devak, Matthew’s “guardian” and Jet their gargoyle companion. I really do like the dynamic of the new characters and the family they form with Matthew.
A few things I can tell you are:
- Matthew finally gets the collar off.
- We find out whom Matthew’s sire is.
- We find out whom Matthew’s mother is.
- We find out more of Matthew’s abilities; more so coming from his Sire’s side.
I cannot tell you how impressed I am by Jex Lane’s writing and ability to create this detailed world with all the characters involved. I was a bit weary that the second book might falter from the first, but I totally worried for nothing. IMO, this volume was good, if not better than the first. Seriously, there is a mention of other “worlds” in this book, and we do get a taste of it when demons are introduced. Let me just say you will be on edge of your seat near the end of the book. I also have this feeling that there will be a major battle for humanity in which more of our characters that we have grown to love will die. However, if this does happen, I hope that it is not in vain and that a truce will form between the two species.
One thing that did not change for me is my feelings towards the incubi. I still think that they are asses! I cannot tell you how much their actions pissed me off in the first book, and let me just say they didn’t sway me to change my mind in this one. Assholes!
OMG the cliffhanger! In fact, I think this cliffhanger is way more intense than the first book. So intense, I need the next fucking volume NOW! I was a blubbering baby at the end; truly saddened and upset about certain circumstances. In addition, we are left with a few riddles from Samantha, which I assume will eventually be answered in the future.
I have to say that this book is truly a great read and I highly recommend it. If anyone has any specific questions, I would be more than happy them for you.
Side Note: This book has not only MM scenes, but a very brief FF scene that turns into brief MFF. There is also mention of a three some that involves MMF, but no detail is given. The main love interests in this book however are male. Please keep in mind that the reason the use of women is due to Matthew and Tarrick being incubi.
This is the second book in the series: Beautiful Monsters.
