Chad has pined for Raudel since high school, but he’s been avoiding him ever since Raudel caught him in an excruciatingly embarrassing moment. So when Chad’s sister invites Raudel to join them for her weeklong prewedding celebration at Lake Tahoe, Chad is horrified. He brainstorms his escape, until reality crashes down and he discovers he’s bunking with Raudel in the last available bedroom at the lakeside retreat.
Thrown together by the bridal party from hell, Chad and Raudel unite and attempt to survive Chad’s bridezilla sister, a crazy grandmother, an overbearing mother, and the search for the perfect chocolate fountain. Despite the little time they have together, they reconnect when unexpected discoveries come to light. Love may find a way amid the nuptial chaos, but it’s unlikely to be exactly the way they expect.
States of Love: Stories of romance that span every corner of the United States.
This story has so many elements that would normally drive me completely insane that it absolutely shouldn’t have worked for me at all…but damn it all I couldn’t help but like it.
Humorous, over the top insta-love, with enough shenanigans to choke a horse…it just plain worked for me. Told from Chad’s POV, his crush on Raudel and his absolute panic over the thought of seeing him again is hilarious. You see, Chad got caught in a very compromising position by Raudel, and it’s colored his reaction to his big sister’s best friend in the years that have followed.
“I was convinced you thought I was some perverted weirdo because of what you saw. That’s what’s been in my head all these years. ‘Raudel thinks I’m disgusting, Raudel never liked me, never could’—all those mindfucky things we do to ourselves. But even with all of that, I held on to the fantasy part of you. The part I knew deep down was more than a crush, that all this time—” The hint of a panic attack built, but he sucked in a few good breaths to stave it off until he could force the rest of his thoughts out. “That all this time I might still be in love with you. Because even when I tried to tell myself I was way too young to have known what love was back then, the reality is that a crush doesn’t stick to a person the way it has when I think of you. If I hadn’t tried so damn hard to find another guy, I’d think it was obsession. Hell, I might still think that anyway. But I want to find out the answer to it one way or the other. Because before you leave, I want to either be with you from now on or walk away from you for good.”
Once they’re together though, the sparks fly, the love bloom unfurls entirely, and the two bond immediately.
“Am I enough for you?”
“Oh, don’t ever fear that.” Raudel took his hand. “I’ve waited for you for so long. I spent how long in LA, believing I had everything that life could offer? But it always came back to wishing I had you. That someday we could be together after all.” He twined their fingers together. “To have you with me is not enough. It’s more than enough.”
I just wish it would have had an epilogue to tie things up a little better.
Completely over the top and chock full of insta-love, this novella has humor, a little bit of heat, a whole lot of love, and a sweet HFN/HEA.
