Talon Valdez knew when he transformed into an enhanced human, his life and his dreams were finished. Reviled, mistrusted, and often locked away, the enhanced were viewed as monsters, despised by the public, and never trusted to serve in the military or any law enforcement agency.

Years later he gets a chance to set up a task force of enhanced to serve in the FBI, but with one proviso: each enhanced must partner with a regular human.

Finn Mayer dreamed of joining the FBI from the time he was fourteen and made every possible sacrifice to make it happen, including living with his selfish mother and bullying, homophobic brother and never having a boyfriend. But his undiagnosed dyslexia stopped his aspirations dead in their tracks. His last chance is to partner with Talon, an enhanced with deadly abilities who doesn’t trust regular humans with their secrets and wants Finn to fail.

Four weeks to prove himself to the team. Four weeks for the team to prove itself to the public. And when another group threatens their success—and their lives are at stake—four weeks for them to survive.

Victoria Sue is a brand new author for me and my first venture into her work was a great experience. “Five Minutes Longer” reminded me of my favorite Marvel comics, X-MEN. Though the plot had a few similarities with the famous comics, there were no such blatant similarities to speak of. What I mostly loved about this book was the amazing character development in midst of all the action. All the characters were very well detailed and I felt really connected to the HEROs.

This read is about a group of “Enhanced” individuals who are trying to find a respectful place in the society where they have always been mistreated and mistrusted. Talon Valdez is the leader of the group of Enhanced, a part of FBI’s experimental venture into creating a joint-team of Enhanced and humans. Many humans/trained FBI agents has been paired with the group without any success. Enter Finn Mayer. Finn wants to be an FBI agent more than anything in the world. He is dyslexic and has struggled very hard to earn his place in the FBI. Finn’s entry into the HERO (Human Enhanced Rescue Organization) program is met with disdain and mistrust from the Enhanced who are far more superior to any human. Talon knows that in no way will Finn be able to keep up with the intense and condensed training but as time goes, Finn becomes an integral part of the team. All the other members start accepting him whereas Talon finds himself falling for the green-eyed rookie. The HEROs have many challenges in front of them towards winning people’s trust and respect and they will do their best to prove themselves as “TRUE HEROES”.

The entire concept of the Enhanced is nicely done. The author describes the condition as genetic which manifests in the individual when they are kids. The only thing distinguishing them from the ordinary humans is a distinct mark below their eyes. Every Enhanced has a special ability just like the mutants in X-MEN. They are shunned by society and looked down upon which originates mostly from fear of their special abilities. The group of Enhanced in our story are trying to be a part of law-enforcement and gain people’s trust by using the same abilities that makes them different.

In the romance department we have Finn and Talon who are immensely attracted to each other but are unsure of how it will affect their fragile team. Talon has always been ostracized by the society and he wants this new team to be a success as a first step towards changing the outlook of people on every Enhanced individual there is. It’s a mission of his life. Finn’s appearance does not sit well with him at first but he helps him nonetheless. Finn is a hard-working guy and sympathizes with the plight of the Enhanced and wants the team to be a success as much as the others.

Talon’s main focus is his team and team mates but his feelings for Finn sneaks up on him. Talon does not want it to affect their team but at the end he realizes that he loves Finn and he is a necessity in Talon’s life he can no longer deny.

Apart from the romance, the internal dynamics of the group is another significant part of the story. I loved how the Enhanced team members accept Finn and become so protective of him. The trust growth happens eventually and at the end they really become a team who always had each others back.

The plot is very fast paced with events showcasing the special abilities of each member of the team. There are many twists and turns in the plot coupled with some adrenaline spiking action sequences. We have already got our Magneto in this story and I will be waiting for the appearance of Dr. Charles Xavier, the savior of the Enhanced.

I am hoping the author will continue this story as a series. As a standalone this book has many holes because there were many things that were left unresolved. But it lays an interesting foundation for the future adventures of the HEROs. I would love to read more about the other members of the team and how they start gaining the much-needed trust and respect of the common public. There is a mystery in this story which has been left partially resolved and I am hoping that it will be continued in the future books.

Overall this story is a great action packed love story and hopefully a start to a brand new “Enhanced” series. I would love to read more from this author.
