When State Trooper Travis Kinslow is injured right before Thanksgiving, the only positive is that for once he won’t be working during the holidays. Since he has no family, Travis was absorbed into his best friend, Joe’s, and he considers them as good as his own. Everyone except Joe’s brother Noah. Travis has been in love with the younger man for much of his life, but he’s always kept his distance.
As an ER nurse, Noah is a caretaker by nature. When his brother’s best friend is hurt, he’s happy to help Travis while he heals. He’s only ever allowed himself to think of Travis as the next best thing to an older brother, but by the light of the Christmas tree, Noah finally sees Travis’s true feelings. And in that moment, everything changes.
When faced with opposition and a Christmas nothing like they imagined, will their hopes for the future be enough to carry them through?
“His Needs” is a feel good, minimal to none angst, holiday romance novella with a very sweet HEA. It starts with “unrequited love” which gradually converts to love/feelings on both sides as our couple is compelled to spend time with each other due to an unfortunate (read very, very fortunate) accident.
When state trooper Travis Kinslow is injured in an accident just before Thanksgiving, the entire Mastriano family takes it upon themselves to care for him. Travis has always considered his best friend, Joe’s family as his own and thus he can’t refuse the order of mama Mastriano to let Joe’s baby brother, Noah, an ER nurse to help him heal and recuperate. Travis has been in love with the youngest Mastriano for decades but he never vocalized his feelings. But when he has to spend more than usual hours in close proximity with the object of his desire, it is not long before his “secret” is out.
Travis’ desire for Noah is expressed very vividly and with full of longing in the first half of the book. Noah was clueless about Travis’ feelings for him and I loved the anticipation from the start. The couple get together at about 50% of the story but the “unrequited” part was not drawn out unnecessarily. The romance is relatively no-angst with a little bit of tension at the end but there was a hint that everything will be ok for the couple eventually.
We get the story completely from Travis’ POV and it was very effectively used to describe the depth of feelings that he harbored for Noah. Once Noah finally realizes Travis’ love for him, he turns into a passionate, dirty-talking hellcat in bed! The couple’s chemistry exploded after that and I had a swell time enjoying the story.
All the secondary characters add beautifully to the romance. In a short amount of pages the relationship of Travis with each member of the Mastriano clan is described very nicely. Through their interactions we could easily understand how much Travis was loved and accepted by Noah’s family.
Overall, this book has everything for a short and sweet holiday novella. From long-awaited love to friendship to family and then finally to the sweetest HEA, this story had it all.
