By Degrees is an ensemble character series with multiple points of view.
New York City FBI team leader Samuel Shaughnessy lives for his immediate family and his job. After a marriage gone wrong, he has stuck to a firm rule when it comes to relationships: he doesn’t have them. Sexually active and emotionally unavailable keeps him satisfied, especially now that he is in hot pursuit of a serial killer targeting gay men.
Former firefighter Machlan O’Bannon now manages a successful sports bar in Houston, and after years of waiting, he’s ready to stand up and be the man he always wanted to be: out, proud and drama-free. His politically-aligned family wants to keep him locked in the closet, but Mac just wants to meet the man of his dreams.
One man is as high strung as the other is laid back. A chance meeting brings them together, and one night of passion ignites a fire neither can fight. Their lives are not only miles apart, but as different as day and night. They don’t want to get involved, but they might not be able to keep apart.
First Edition published by MLR Press, December 2011.
This book completely blew me away. At first I was worried about it being a book with a whole lot of different points of views and I worried it would get confusing but the truth is that Taylor V Donovan did such an amazing job at writing this book that it was very easy to follow. It was also amazing to be able to read whatever situation was going on from all the different points of views and to be able to have all the different views on a particular situation. It kind of helped to put whatever was happening at the time into perspective.
Though there are many different people in this book and their point of views also, this book still truly revolves around two men Sam and Mac.
Both of these men are completely opposite of the other in many ways but when the two men get together they light where ever they are at on fire. I was amazed that my kindle did not burst into flames more then once while reading about these two men.
Sam is an FBI agent that does not do any type of relationship. He is a hit it and quit it type of guy and he never breaks his rules for anyone. Something horrible happened in his past to cause him to become this way but of course that is something he keeps close to his heart and does not let anyone in on it. His rules are what keeps him from getting attached to anyone and risking getting hurt.
Then Sam meets Mac. Mac is still in the closet but not because he is scared to admit he is gay but because he let his family manipulate him into staying in the closet till a set time and date. That time and date is wuickly approaching and Mac could not be happier about it. He is ready to experience a real relationship with a man andafter meeting Sam he is determined that man will be him. He just has to play Sam’s games in order to make that happen.
While Sam is trying to fight him and Mac getting closer at all costs he is also working with his FBI team to catch a serial killer thaey have named LEV. Lev is targeting gay men and most of them men he is targeting look a certain way. The closer they get to catching him the more LEV intensifies his killing spree. No one knows who will be targeted next and if they are not carful and work harder to find him then someone they know may very well be next.
As I said I truly loved this book and I cannot wait to read book two. Taylor V Donovan was able to suck me into this book by giving just enough details on certain things happening but never the full answer. It was both intriguing and infuriating because I wanted to know what happened or what was going to happen. But I think that is what helped to make this book so amazing and made me immediately want to read the next book in the series.
Truly a five star read. Cannot wait to get the next book.
