Marek and Adrian dated in high school, but a bitter breakup led them to choose different paths. Adrian is out and proud while Marek is in the closet. Adrian embraces his eccentricity while Marek clings to a conservative image. And while Marek worked hard to build a successful life and financial stability by climbing the corporate ladder, Adrian threw caution to the wind and has spent the last five years backpacking across the world.
Now Adrian is back in Warsaw, Poland, but while Marek thinks they will have a hookup and have a blast from the past, Adrian is just looking for a place to crash. Worse still, Adrian turns up at Marek’s advertising agency for help with his outrageous new business venture, and if Marek wants to get promoted, he might have to work with the guy who broke his heart.
“I love you More Than Pierogi” by K.A. Merikan is a sweet, freeing and slightly-emotional romance set in the beautiful country of Poland. It gives a vivid account of the healing and rebuilding city of Warsaw. Every reader will feel a strong connection with the city which is described and accounted so beautifully here. The experience of knowing a city you have never been to is what you will get in this book. The culture, the mindset of the people, their struggles and hopes and oh, GOD! The food, everything was on point in this book. The romance in between all of this was just as engaging and “Khatta-meetha” (sour-sweet). I loved it all!!!
The MCs are completely different in views and characters. Where Adrian has a love for adventure and thinking outside the box, Marek is stiff and proper, leading a superficial life, living a lie and trying very hard to fit in. So, you can guess that they are as opposite as they can get. But they were inseparable once when they were kids. So despite a horrible breakup almost 5 years ago, Marek and Adrian still had unresolved and very strong feelings for each other which they unearth one realization at a time as they room together.
Marek is in deep-closet trying to fit in with his asshole co-workers who did not have any respect for him whatsoever. He strives very hard trying to make a life on his own in the city and shedding his “country roots”. He works non-stop without enjoying life. Adrian on the other hand has lived his dream to see the world. He is laidback and completely comfortable in his skin as an out and proud gay man. Adrian does not understand why Marek is leading a life where he is not happy. They clash on a lot of things which makes them different but they both learn to compromise and see from the others POV to better understand and help each other.
Marek runs hot and cold a lot and most readers will feel like he is annoying and a stuck-up but I sympathized with him the most. Marek was mostly scared of giving in to his true desires and has lived many years hiding and pretending to be someone he is not. He has worked hard at his job and is scared to rock the boat by standing up for himself or coming out of the closet. His breakup with Adrian was also the result of his fear which has pained him continuously throughout the years. Marek needed the support and love from Adrian to finally have the courage to be himself and Adrian is wonderful in providing it to him wholeheartedly.
This story is about second-chances, mostly in the case of Marek. His life changes 180 degree at the end and he is never been happier. He gets back the love of his life, he is finally free to express that love and lastly he has a career doing something he absolutely loved and enjoyed without any homophobic bigots to please. Marek goes through a complete life make-over with Adrian by his side and their HEA at the end could not have been more sweeter.
The romance here is the best kind of slow-burn there is. Adrian and Marek had a whole sack of issues to work through and along with it all, their attraction shimmers and sizzles at a low-flame and catches fire at the absolute perfect time in their relationship. I could not have hoped for a better conclusion.
The polish food is an important and integral part of this story. I have never tried Polish food before and so with each dish mentioned here I was going back and forth to Wikipedia to learn more about them in detail. After this book I just can’t wait to try them all. The Polish Pierogi looks just like a famous Bengali sweet dish (puli-pitha) we make here and I was very excited about this discovery. Have a look:
Looks similar right!!!
This book is a tantalizing slice of Poland which I relished with each and every page. It features a very sweet and fresh romance along with a profound experience of the country Poland. I congratulate the authors for crafting such a beautiful story which completely stole my heart. I am looking forward to my next trip to a new and amazing country through this amazing series!!!
