By Degrees: Book Two

FBI team leader Samuel Shaughnessy and bar manager Machlan O’Bannon are exploring a new phase in their nonrelationship. The intention is to take it slowly, but power plays are still their favorite activity, and it isn’t long before lines begin blurring. After ending their friends-with-benefits agreement, no rules are left in place to guide them, and soon the only thing that’s clear is that neither man is fighting hard enough to reestablish the boundaries.

Their situations haven’t improved in the three months since their first encounter. Sam is still focused on his immediate family issues, and everything indicates Mac will have to go to war with his own family before he can reclaim his freedom. The last thing they need is additional complications.

But when the opening of a nightclub brings Mac to New York City and a break in the Leviticus investigation leads Sam to Houston, they discover how closely their worlds have been connected from the beginning. Hiding from the life-altering collision is not an option. They can take the easier road and go their separate ways or come to terms with their pasts and take a chance on each other.

First Edition published by CreateSpace, 2013.

Seriously, can this author do no wrong? I cannot tell you how much I adore this series. This woman could make the book 1k pages, and I would happily read it. Really, I wouldn’t complain or even feel the strain of reading such a book, because she really is that good. I’m so caught up in the imagery in the scenes that she has created as well as the plot and dialogue between the characters, that before I know it, I’m at the end. She really has an art for storytelling.

So, needless to say this series has brought out my inner sleuth. Really, I have I gone back-and-forth between the two books keeping notes trying to solve the “case”. Yeah, *blushes* I told you….

So, again we are left with Lev in the wind, but supposedly knowing who he is. I say this because Taylor is so good with the intricate web she is weaving, I wouldn’t put it past her to throw a wrench in everything. I do think that this book has a better balance between the suspense/romance aspect of the story. In addition, Sam isn’t as much as an ass as he was before. That and the fact that his sister seems to have turned a ‘possible’ positive corner due to an unfortunate event to one of the characters.

However, I still have this niggling feeling that something is going to happen to Mac. Whether it has something to do with the twins or Lev; I really cannot say one way or the other now. I guess I have what you would say a pessimistic outlook on life while I read this book; but hey, when things go great I am super excited. Does that count?!?

Even though most of my questions were answered in this book; the author has, of course, given us more food for thought. Like:

  • Will Gabby ever let go? Really, you need to!
  • Is there something going on between K-Squared (Duncan and Kostas)?
  • Oh, where oh where did Lev go to?
  • Amy, I hope you did not do what I think you have done. If so, WTF?!@ Not to mention the bombshell that was dropped here. Yeah, I didn’t see that coming. I can only defend myself by saying I was caught up in the “Who really is Lev?” plot, and that just slipped by me. Oops…
  • I still want to know what exactly happened to Logan in his past. In addition, will there be a possible love match between him and Detective Callahan?
  • Oh, and Detective Callahan has a new partner, Michael Mitchell. I wonder what his part will be in all of this.

Again, we are left with a cliffhanger, and yes, I am still happy with this. I think the author is doing a fantastic job with this story. So much so, I am hoping that the series will go on; possibly with different Unsubs in order for a majority of the team to get their HEA’s. So, if you couldn’t tell, I am anxiously awaiting the third book in the series: Six Degrees of Agony!

I love reading books about boys who love other boys <3. Sometimes there is a HEA or HFN, but sometimes it just is. Yes, I love all outcomes even it is not what I hoped for. We all need a good cry from time to time. As you can probably can tell, I love cliffhangers as well. Yeah, I am one of those people :) I read a variety of genres, whether it is dark/taboo, historical, shifters, GFY, SciFi, mysteries/thrillers; I love it all.
