When Nathaniel, aka Deuce, arrives home to an apartment building on fire, he can only think of one thing: his pregnant dog. Luckily firefighter Trey Donovan rescues her, and Nathaniel is exceedingly grateful. In fact, he tracks down Trey’s station so he can show his gratitude properly—and explore the connection he senses between them. Trey’s interested, but a less-than-friendly ex-wife and the seven-year-old daughter he’s raising make things… complicated. Between everything on Trey’s plate and the newborn puppies Deuce must care for—while homeless—finding common ground won’t be easy. But the spark of attraction between them is too enticing to be allowed to fizzle.

This is a great book about starting over, literally in this case,
It all starts with a fire in the apartment building that Deuce lives in and an amazing firefighter rescuing Duece’s very pregnant dog, Q. So for Deuce starting over is his only option since he pretty lost his home but all and all Deuce could care less because Q is safe and that is what truly matters to him. The rest of the stuff can be replaced.
Deuce is so appreciative to Trey for saving Q. So much so that he decides to go to the firehouse and thank him and offer him picknof the litter as a thank you. All it takes is one moment in time to change people and one moment in time to make a new path for someone. That moment in time for both Deuce and Trey is re meeting again at the firehouse and an agreed dinner and beer as a thank you. That moment is when both of these men started downs path neither expected or was looking for but in the end was the beginning of a new life for both men. It was the starting point for them to become friends and eventually lovers.
The only thing that really puts a damper on their new relationship is Trey’s ex wife Holly. She is not happy about Trey moving on but both men decide that it does not affect her one way or another as long as both men treat Trey’s daughter with Holly with respect and honesty. So even though Holly tried to cause problems she does not get far because Trey’s daughter loves Deuce from almost the moment she met him and Deuce feels the same.
This was a great love story about finding the person that makes coming home a truly happy thing. It is about finding the love of your life and figuring out together how to navigate through the bad things and bask in the good things. And it is about starting over, in Deuces case literally. I truly enjoyed this read and I would definitely recommend it to others.
