It’s never easy to find redemption.
Carrying scars and regrets, River Darcourt avoids too much intimate contact. Among his friends, he is known as a quiet loner. Forget about love. It’s not something he will consider… until sweet, young, and tempting Morgan Hayes becomes his housemate. River closed his heart long ago, but the attraction is impossible to deny.
Morgan Hayes needs a change. He is moving out of his critical father’s home and in with his friends, including his secret/not-so-secret crush, River. Having feelings for River is a terrible idea. But what is a guy to do when the annoyingly sexy mechanic is just across the hall?
While Morgan has overcome ugliness and is ready for love, he’s just not sure River ever will be. They have both experienced pain in their lives. So Morgan dares River to take a chance, and love will either break their fractured hearts in more pieces or, just possibly, make them whole again.
This review might contain spoilers for the previous book in the series
“His love for River was true. And when somebody loved you like that, in that way that was rare and special, it made you believe in yourself. River, who never stayed long in one place, was now planning a lifetime in Ocean Vista. He would protect, honor, and love Morgan for all their tomorrows.”
Secrets of you is one of the most anticipated books of 2017, and I know I speak for a lot of readers. River broke our hearts in [book:Here For You|24696011] and he’s been an enigma ever since. I’m certain that fans of the Sunshine and Happiness series are dying for his story.
To me, this book was a surprise. I was expecting a classic “dead lover” story, but it’s not the only thing I got. The angst and the conflict here is not just a result of Brendan’s loss. River has secrets and a lot of baggage. And a past that still haunts him. River keeps running away, but it’s not just the memory of Brendan he’s running away from.
I loved Morgan in the previous books, and I adored him here. He really was Sunshine and Happiness despite what happened to him. His efforts to get back on his feet were pretty amazing.
The romance is very well done. There is passion and sweetness, gentleness and a lot of emotion. It resonated a lot with me why River hid his past from everyone, and I loved that he only trusted Morgan more than anybody else. I also loved how protective and possessive River is of Morgan, and how much Morgan’s effeminate side turns River on! The steamy scenes were scorching hot!
“You give it up for me so fucking sweetly. It kills me.”
Another thing that I loved is how both MC’s families are portrayed. Like real life families, not too evil or too awesome; parents that love their kids, but aren’t doing their best to support them, or family members that are unable to forgive, even if they want to. There are no easy fixes, and sometimes no happy endings at all when family relationships are cocerned. Skylar Cates nailed this aspect of the story.
My two niggles (and the reason this isn’t a 5 star read for me): This is a very angsty story, but the angst isn’t contrived at all. I felt, however, that River took it a bit too far with the “I’m cursed, and death follows me around” excuse for not being together with Morgan.
I also missed the other guys. Don’t get me wrong, we do see them on page, and I loved Cole and Ian’s wedding, but I missed this sense of family that was so present int he previous books.
These were only small complaints though, and in the end Secrets of You was a big winner for me. I thought that this was the last installment, but there were some new characters here that are begging for a story. I so hope the author gives them one.
