Man and wolf. Sworn enemies in the battle for Askara. Can hate and betrayal ever lead to love?
Caleb Harken has spent six years wrongfully imprisoned for his father’s treachery. Tortured and reviled by the very wolf pack he should have been leading as Alpha, he is not surprised to learn he’s finally to meet his death at the hands of the human rebel leader, Taegan Callan.
Taegan gave up his dreams of a life-mate and a family after seeing too many humans butchered at the hands of the wolves—even if Caleb doesn’t seem to be the bloodthirsty savage he expects, and even if he starts to long for a different kind of future with the wolf.
Can Caleb become the Alpha he was always meant to be and lead his pack, or will he finally realize that winning his freedom means nothing when he has already lost his heart?

Wow, this was even better than the first book. If you’re looking for a true mates shifter story with massive amounts of hurt/comfort, look no further!

The one thing I liked a little less about the first book was that there was so much action and suspense that the main couple didn’t have all that time to actually be together. That’s why I was so happy with this one. It was still action packed and there were a lot of things going on, but there was also enough room for lots of character and relationship development. Although it has way less smex than the first book, but that never bothered me here.

I’m a bit hesitant to say you should read this as a stand-alone, because you would miss out on the entire world-building and I think that’s important to understand this story. Even though it is about a totally different couple who were not in the first book.

Caleb is a 25 year old wolf who has never been able to shift. His father was the Alpha of his pack until he died by the hand of Caleb’s uncle. Caleb’s uncle took over and immediately imprisoned Caleb when he was 19. Caleb has been tortured for 6 years and has given up the will to live long ago when his uncle drags him out of his room and has him enter a ritual. A blood ritual where he is up against a captured human. It is clear to Caleb he won’t stand a chance against the human since Caleb is starved and cannot shift. But the human doesn’t know that and is ready to kill the ‘evil wolf’. But then there is a ruckus and the humans escape, taking Caleb with them as a hostage.

When Teagan, the human rebel leader, takes the wolf with him he is planning to get information out of him and then kill him. But things don’t add up. The wolf doesn’t even look like a wolf. When he accidentally almost kills Caleb, Teagan rescues him without thinking. And it seems Caleb somehow trusts Teagan because he keeps falling asleep in his lap and snuggling in for warmth.

But Teagan has no idea what to do with the wolf who cannot shift. All he knows is that he doesn’t want to kill him anymore..

I loved how in the first book we had a human in the middle of an werewolf pack and here we had a wolf in the middle of humans. Both parties had so much prejudice toward each other. But both parties were also ready for change, just not everyone.

There is so much hurt/comfort in this, I was in book heaven. Caleb is such a hurt soul, body and mind. I loved how Teagan tried to be all badass rebel leader at first but could not help but be tender and loving with Caleb. He never wanted to hurt the sweet wolf.

I was happy to see the relationship had time to develop before the story was thrust into action once again. There isn’t a lot of sex in this, but somehow it felt fitting. It was more about building trust than it was about sex. And I was just fine with that.

It seems there will be more books in this series since we got a glimpse of everything that still needs fixing in the kingdom, so I’m eagerly awaiting the next book!
