It’s the Night of Winter Lights.
Heedless of the holiday, the Commander of the H’Aren fortress, Captain Torýn Torhdhar, seems to find his satisfaction in work.
Such occurrence hardly surprises his Orderly, Sæbastyn Hyago, even though the young Lieutenant has spent a silent, aching decade wishing his superior officer would pursue pleasure elsewhere—specifically in his arms. But as the evening continues, nothing about it meets Sæbastyn’s expectations. Will the Lieutenant see his secret desires realised, or his heart shattered?
This alternative winter holiday short, which is a standalone set in the Order Universe.
This is a short story, a slice of life in author’s larger fantasy universe.
It’s comforting and relaxing, a reminder that on holidays some wishes do come true if people are brave enough to reach for them.
Sæbastyn has been in love with his captain for years, but the other man is older, descendant of noble house and his superiors. There is no universe in which his love and devotion are returned, but he is happy to stay near his beloved. I thought it both heartbreaking and touching that for years Sæbastyn buys gifts on this holiday for Torýn, but never dares to hand them over.
