A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2017 Advent Calendar collection Stocking Stuffers.
Clay and Daniel fell in love as enlisted men during Desert Shield, but Don’t Ask Don’t Tell meant they had to keep it secret. After Clay’s convoy was ambushed, PTSD changed him, and their relationship ended in a horrible fight on Christmas Eve.
Twenty-five years later, they’ve reconnected on Facebook, and Clay finds out Daniel will be alone on Christmas Eve. Impulsively, he sets out for Daniel’s hometown of Gilead, Ohio—where Daniel is now the mayor—to surprise him with a visit. But a blizzard strikes and Clay wrecks his car. All hope of seeing Daniel is lost—until a mysterious old man named Nick offers Clay a ride. The weight of past wounds and the scars of war might make their reunion awkward, but Clay is willing to take the risk to win back his lost love. Despite a lifetime of disappointing holidays, Clay hopes that this soldier is finally coming home for Christmas.
Sometimes Christmas Miracles really do happen and sometimes those miracles need a little help from a man with a white hair and beard, and a delivery truck. Just so happens that man’s name is Nick. But that does not mean that he is St. Nick or does it?
Clay and Daniel were both together in the army when Don’t Ask Don’t Tell was still in place and though they had three years together they were not able to make it in the end. Some of the reason their relationship failed is because Daniel was not ready to come out and he re-enlisted without Clay knowing but it did not help matters that Clay had been injured in action and could not deal with PTSD and used drugs and alcohol to hide the affects, even from Daniel.
So years later when Clay is clean and somehow finds Daniel on Facebook he does not hesitate to send him a friend request. More than that when Clay realizes that Daniel is single and going to be alone for Christmas, Clay jumps in his vehicle to go to him.
Clay does not expect there to be a winter storm nor does he anticipate being caught in it and wrecking his car so close to his destination. Out of nowhere a man named Nick comes along and saves Clay.
Once Clay reaches Daniel’s home all bets are off the table when things start to get real between these former lovers. Can these two men work out the problems that split them up to begin with and maybe be able to have the relationship that they were destined to have?
I really enjoyed this book about second chances at love. It is a quick read but it was a good read. I love the little twist that was added to this read. Made it so much better.
