War never leaves a soldier behind.

Staff Sergeant Alexei Dvorkin is still healing from his brief stint as a prisoner of war. While his physical wounds have mended, the emotional scars left behind are slow to disappear. Eager to prove his resilience in the face of lingering trauma, Alexei is determined to complete his first mission in three months and get back into the field—but he’s not forging ahead without his lover.

Nightmares will always linger.

Agent Sean Delaney’s recovery from trauma is more slow going than he would like, but he pushes through in order to return to active duty and not be left behind. But every decision he makes leaves him feeling like he’s gone two steps forward and one step back when it comes to Alexei. The guilt Sean feels from what they both endured still colors his interactions with the man he loves. Trying to overcome it is difficult and exhausting, making Sean question his place in Alexei’s heart.

Holding on is the hardest thing to do.

The ties between Alexei and Sean were frayed by the enemy’s hand. Mending what’s been broken between them will require a depth of honesty neither man is ready to face just yet. But if they don’t, they risk losing a future together neither wants to let go.

Out of the Ashes is a 28,000 word novella that follows directly after In the Blood in my Metahuman Files series and builds off of events in that book. It is recommended that you read In the Blood first before reading Out of the Ashes. There are explicit intimate scenes that are not suitable for readers under the age of 18 within the novella.

I really enjoyed this short read. It is more a follow-up for the last Metahumans book, so my suggestion is to read that book first because if not then this book will make no sense whatsoever. For those that have already read the last book, this book is definitely a welcome addition in my opinion.

I always wondered how Sean and Alexei would recover after everything they both suffered in the previous book so I was very happy to find out that Hailey Turner was writing this book. This book is focused on the aftermath and how hard it is for these two men to go back to what they were before the torture they endured.

Alexei is definitely healing both physically and emotionally faster than Sean is. He is ready to go back to work and be a part of his team again. He is not having anywhere near the amount of emotional distress that Sean is but then again Alexei knows that Sean could not have stopped what happened and he knows that it was not Sean’s fault.

Sean is not faring even half as well as Alexei when it comes to the emotional distress. He is still not sleeping well, has nightmares when he does, and still blames himself for everything that happened. So much so that he has pulled away from Alexei and now they are basically just roommates instead of partners and lovers.

Can Sean work through his emotions before they cause him to lose the man that he loves so much or was it all just too much for these two men to come back from?

Hailey Turned did such an incredible job at writing a follow-up book for this. I truly believe that it was needed and I was so happy to see that she wrote one. This may have been a short novella but it definitely has an impact. I can’t wait until the next book in this series comes out. This is such an amazing series.

Advanced Review Copy

Galley copy of Out of The Ashes (A Metahuman Files: Classified Novella #1) provided by Hailey Turner in exchange of an honest review.

Hello, I am an avid reader of male/male books. I do not have a favorite genre when it comes to male/male books because I love all of them from romance, dark reads, paranormal, shifter, threesome, whatever I see that catches my eye at the time.

I read books about rock stars, CEOs, military, cops, and just the original plain old good boy types of books.

Basically when it comes to a book, I read whatever I am in the mood for at the time. So my tastes varies from day to day and sometimes even hour to hour.

Please comment! We'd love to hear from you.
