Sometimes the best day of your life is the one you never saw coming.
Joe Cohen has devoted the past two years of his life to one thing: the care and feeding of Kade Bosa. His partner in their PI business, roommate, and best friend, Kade is everything to Joe, even if their relationship falls short of what Joe desires most. But he won’t push. Kade has suffered a rough road, and Joe’s pretty sure he’s the only thing holding Kade together.
Estranged from his own family, Joe knows the value of desperately holding on to someone dear, but he never expected his present and past to collide just as Kade’s is doing the same. Now they’ve stumbled across evidence that could change their lives: the impact of Kade’s tragic past, their job partnership, and any future Joe might allow himself to wish for….
This was my first audiobook by narrator Michael Fell. And while I liked his regular voice, he sometimes made Kade sound like he had to go to the bathroom real quick.
I liked Michael Fell’s ‘telling voice’ more. He had a nice cadence and I quickly got used to him. I also liked the voice he did for Joe and for several other people. But Kade…. he made him sound so constipated… It was a shame because the voices he did for other people were nice and enjoyable.
When I started this book I immediately noticed that these guys were so like Ian and Miro. And that’s not a complaint at all. I love the whole partners-falling-in-love setup, so I will read anything Mary decides to write about it. But I do have to say while I really loved this, there was too much story for this novella. It all felt rushed and I just wanted more.
Joe and Kade are partners in the PI business. At the start of this story we immediately learn that Joe has been head over heels for Kade for quite some time. Kade is bi, but takes everyone to bed except Joe. Kade is different around Joe and trusts him implicitly (sound familiar?).
There are some things in Kade’s past which are now coming back to haunt him. So that’s why Kade decides they go hide at Joe’s parents winery, after picking up a witness and bringing him along. But Joe hasn’t talked to his parents’ in 2 years when the news about him being gay wasn’t received with hugs and kisses…
The romance was not front center in this one, but since both MCs were present for the entire story, that never bothered me. I actually liked this entire story. Joe, Kade, the romance, the family times, Declan, who they took with them, all of it. But….. it was just so rushed! There were so many things going on but not enough time to finish up with everything properly. I was quite disappointed in the way Kade’s past was resolved.
But this was still a pure Mary and I do love (almost) anything Mary writes. I just wish she’d have made this a bigger book. These guys needed it.
But hey, PI partners falling in love Mary style.
I’m definitely going to check out more of Michael Fell’s audiobooks, because I really liked his narration overall.
