In a city overrun by lawlessness and corruption, best friends and lovers- Prohibition Agents Harlan Mackay and Nathan Reilly, are fighting a losing battle. With bootleggers running amuck and countless speakeasies materializing every day, how can two men possibly hope to make a difference? Especially when they can’t even trust their own bureau?
If dealing with hoodlums wasn’t enough, a ghost from Nathan’s past threatens to destroy everything Harlan and Nathan hold dear.
Wow, this was such an intriguing first book in what I predict will be an equally intriguing series. Charlie Cochet just has a special talent for writing books that capture the reader’s attention from book one. This book was no different. This book did not end with a cliffhanger but it definitely ended leaving me wanting the next book as soon as possible.
This book takes place back in the day. But the thing is Charlie does not make this book seem like the olden times. Most books that are written about the 1920s make you feel lost and definitely have that historical vibe to it but this book did not make me feel this way. It kind of sucked me in from about page three until I got to the end of the book.
Nathan and Harlan are partners on the force together but they are much more then that, they are also partners off the force as well. The only thing is, they have to hide what they mean to one another because in those times it was not accepted at all. So both men have to do what they have to do to hide their feelings for the other in the open. But behind closed doors it is a totally different story.
Nathan and Harlan are working on trying to take down a man named Masin. They believe they may the man to give them the information on him so they plan a bust to get to the man. In doing so a person from Nathan’s past comes back and blows Nathan clean off his feet. As well as causing unforeseen problems between Nathan and Harlan.
Things start to escalate rather quickly and if these two men are not careful then they may just find themselves not only alone but in danger as well.
I truly look forward to the next book. It makes me excited that Charlie has a new series that has captured my attention from the first three pages. That tells me that this is going to be one heck of a series. I can’t wait!!
