Five years ago, Phoenix lost his lover Gabriel, his angel, in a horrific hate crime. All he wanted was to follow him into death and he struggled a long time trying to get his life back together. All this time later, he still hasn’t been able to put the past behind him and forget about the love of his life.
On the anniversary of Gabriel’s death—and 25th birthday—Phoenix’ apartment building catches fire. Will Phoenix do the reasonable thing, or will he rise from the ashes to reunite with his beloved angel?
This is a tragic, bittersweet story of a couple whose lives are destroyed because of other people’s prejudices which should be read by many. It was heart-wrenching and genuine. There’s a bit of violence, only enough to tell the story though.
I like the way the author wrote Angel and Firebird, to the point and beautifully descriptive in its simplicity. The language easy, but the topic heavy, I can clearly imagine this scenario happening in real life. The loss of someone so important to Phoenix and his struggle to overcome and live affected me to the point of crying. Probably through half of the story.
It was shorter than I anticipated nonetheless everything needed to be written was there and left a huge impact on me. There were different possible outcomes the author could have chosen but I felt soothed by the ending, to a point, and it took me awhile to overcome the feelings this story left me with.
