Rafael Patino has a great life in Rain Valley. He’s a teacher at the high school, has a great group of friends, and enjoys the occasional baseball game. Other than the sporadic call from his drunken mother, he’s pretty content.
He’s also been in love with his best friend Dustin for nearly a decade. Years of keeping those feelings under control are put to the test when they begin a summer project together.
Dustin Vance builds furniture for a living, has just earned his pilot’s license, and has an amazing best friend. When he buys a 1976 Cessna Skyhawk, he asks Rafael to help restore it, then travel with him to Wisconsin for the largest aviation convention in the world.
As they spend their days working on the plane, they begin to spend their nights together. Will they find love in the clouds, or will they stall out before they even take off?
FROM THE AUTHOR
Thank you for having me here today! My name is Sarah Hadley Brook and I write MM Romance—mainly contemporary romance. Although I have one short story that takes place in the 1950s. My stories feature men finding their happily ever after, or at least happy for now.
My new release, Love in the Clouds, is about two men who have been best friends for years. As they spend their summer days restoring a 1976 Cessna Skyhawk and plan their trip to Oshkosh, WI to camp out next to the plane, long suppressed feelings bubble to the surface. Can they make that transition from friends to lovers without damaging what they have?
I’ve always wanted to write about the big AirVenture in Oshkosh—the largest aviation celebration on the planet. Each summer, the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) hosts more than half a million people at the Wittman Regional Airport. It’s an absolutely amazing experience. Pilots, aviation enthusiasts, and anyone who is involved in building and selling aircraft attends.
For history buffs, there is an entire field of antique airplanes, some from as early as WWI. Replicas of earlier planes are exhibited as well. Daily aerobatic shows fill the skies. New and old, small and large, military and civilian aircraft—if it’s an airplane, it’s at AirVenture.
I had a lot of fun writing and researching this story. So much so, that I’ve become a wee bit obsessed with flying! My grandparents both had pilot’s licenses, as well as my father and his two brothers. I guess you could say flying is in my blood. While I don’t see myself ever getting my license, several of my cousins have taken the leap and carry on the tradition.
When I was a child, my father built a single-engine Mustang two-seater. He turned part of the basement into a workshop and built the wings and smaller parts until he had to transfer them to a rented hangar at the airport. I remember the day he and a friend had to tote the wings up the stairs and out to a truck. It was a huge ordeal, but they managed to get the job done.
As a child, this only fueled my interest in flight. I read every book about flight I could get my hands on—especially about Amelia Earhart. As I grew up, I became fascinated by space, as well. And when Star Trek Voyager came out with Captain Janeway, I was an instant fan. First, there was a female captain who took charge and flew a ship, commanding the same respect as her male counterparts, just like Amelia Earhart, who flew despite being told women didn’t do that. And second, because she was exploring space, just as early pilots explored our world.
I enjoyed writing this story so much, I’ve already started on another one. I’ll let you read Love in the Clouds and see if you can guess who will be starring in the next story!

ABOUT SARAH HADLEY BROOK
Sarah Hadley Brook lives smack-dab in the middle of the Heartland and is the mother of two wonderful young men, as well as two cats. During the day, she works in the nonprofit world, but reserves evenings for her hobby-turned-passion of writing, letting the characters she conjures in her mind take the lead and show her where the story will go. When not working or writing, she can be found reading, working on dollhouses, trying her hand at new recipes, or watching old movies and musicals. In her ideal world, Christmas would come at least twice a year, Rock Hudson and Doris Day would have costarred in more than three movies, and chocolate would be a daily necessity. She dreams of traveling to Scotland some day and visiting the places her ancestors lived. Sarah believes in “Happily Ever After” and strives to ensure her characters find their own happiness in love and life.
