One morning close to the holidays, Nolan wakes up to two surprises: a distress call from his younger brother and a beautiful man in his bed. Nolan, an art gallery owner, has always been discreet about his sexuality, but when his baby brother plans to come out at the annual family gala, Nolan wants to have his back—and that means showing up with a man of his own on his arm. Nolan knows just the man for the job.
Skylar, who owns a karate studio in St. Augustine, can’t get his one-night stand out of his mind. When he runs into Nolan at his gallery he is more than happy to volunteer his services as arm candy. Out-and-proud himself with his striking blue/green hair, Skylar is all in. Their adventure means a fancy salon, family drama, lots of sex, a ninja hippo, and palm trees lit up in a very suggestive way. By the end of it, what started as a hookup might become much more.
When gallery owner Nolan and karate studio owner Skylar meet, their sexual chemistry is explosive and the book starts right out with a very steamy sex scene (thank you, Kim Katil). The two seem to have a relaxed vibe that bodes for an interesting relationship. But …
… their budding relationship is sandwiched in-between a family drama with Nolan’s homophobic stepfather and spineless mother and a younger brother who wants to bring his boyfriend to the annual Christmas gala. There’s Tor (Victor), Den (Riorden), Aaron, Byron, Jazz and Julia, a visit to a spa to get gussied-up for the gala, a gallery visit where we meet Skylar’s mother and aspiring artist Jasper, a potential job as a life coach / mentor for Skylar’s mother Cordelia, Jazz and Julia’s website … and as I read this short story, I kept wondering if this was part of some series where we had already been introduced to all these people. Apparently not, because “Season of Shimmer” is Kim Katil’s debut work.
“Season of Shimmer” has so many plot lines that can easy spin off into a handful of books, but the romance between Nolan and Skylar is very much on the back burner throughout. Kim Katil writes well (and does a great job on sizzling sex scenes) and I will definitely look forward to reading more from her, but hope there is less chaos and more relationship focus. 3.5 stars.
P.S. After re-reading this last sentence, I feel like I should add in a “Bum Humbug” just to round off my Scroogey review!
