Blurb:

Stephen Mereweather, a young invalid, doubts that gloomy Brackenwell Hall can cure him. What chance does country air, no matter how fresh, have against a disease that has baffled the greatest medical mind in London—his own father? Resigned to a long recovery, Stephen encounters instead a cheeky trespasser who takes Stephen’s bad mood as an invitation to be even more obnoxiously cheerful. It’s enough to make anyone reach for the nearest bottle of laudanum…

But Charlie’s inflated self-regard is not the only inexplicable occurrence at Brackenwell. Stephen’s family is plagued by a series of disappearances and deaths. If Stephen wants to avoid a premature death, he’ll need Charlie’s help… But Charlie may prove an even bigger mystery.

This is my second 5 star read by this author. She has completely blown me away with her fantastic writing and her ability to rouse mystery and intrigue in such a short amount of time.

Stephen Mereweather has been sick his entire life. Living mostly as a recluse, his father has taken him to Brackenwell Hall for the summer while he gets his new practice started in London. During his tour of the residence he falls upon an old roman-style bath, which the staff has said was closed off for years. Yet when he enters each night, he is greeted by Charlie, who turns out to be more than an innocent wanderer.

Gillian St. Kevern’s writing draws you in and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I was so enthralled in this story. There was passion and trickery as well as time travel and charm. The characters were witty and fun, the staff caring and kind. Twists and turns delighted me multiple times during this short book.

I loved The Secretary and the Ghost and was thrilled to have Mr. Leighton and Mr. Cross brought into this mystery as well. I can’t say enough about the thoughtfulness with which each character was created and the thoroughness of the plot line to this story.

Very well done, I can’t say enough about how much I enjoyed this.

  • I’m Intrigued with a capital I! Although I usually don’t read or like historical romance (‘cos I can’t believe the HEA when I know how things worked then in same sex relationships) the blurb and the review has arouse my interest that I’ll try the series and the author for sure!

Reading has become such a huge part of my life as an adult. I love the escape, but I also try to take something from each story for myself. I am a lover of words. I love dialogue. I love a slow burn and a happy ever after. Favorite Authors: Garrett Leigh, Amy Lane, Mary Calmes, Lane Hayes, T.J. Klune, Roan Parrish, N.R. Walker, Cara Dee, Anyta Sunday
